The following is a summary of the August 28 SFCC Governing Board meeting. Please share this document with faculty and staff who may not have access to e-mail.

Oath of Office

SGA President Oman Cooper was sworn in as Student Ex-Officio board member for a one-year term from August 2008 through July 2009.

Resolution

The Governing Board adopted a resolution to honor Dr. Meredith R. Machen with the first SFCC Distinguished Service Medallion Award. The award recognizes her outstanding service of 25 years to the College and her commitment to access and academic achievement, civic engagement, and community and career development.

Dr. Machen thanked the Governing Board. She gave brief remarks about the wonderful mission and values of the college and her appreciation for the work she has been able to perform over her career, the people she has met and the students she will always remember.

President’s Report

Dr. Ortego referred to the following letters of gratitude and other commendations:

·  Liz Bahe, Director of the Office of Student Development, received a letter commending Career Service Coordinator Patty Armstrong for her assistance in starting an extended day learning program at De Vargas Middle School. The letter was from Tess Houle of Citizen Schools.

·  J. Roy Miller, state director for NMSBDC, was selected as a state “Power Broker” in the NM Business Weekly’s 2008-2009 Power Book.

·  Dr. Ortego received a letter from Peggy Damiani, parent of SFCC student Glenn Regal, thanking the college for providing a pleasant registration experience.

·  Dr. Julie Good, Dean of Health and Sciences, was recognized as an honorary member of the Lambda Beta Honor Society for Respiratory Care.

·  Dr. Ortego received a letter from the cooks at the Dulce Public Schools in appreciation of a training provided by Michelle Roetze, adjunct instructor with the Culinary Arts Program.

·  Dr. Ortego received the Rotary Club del Sur’s Paul Harris Fellows Award in recognition of her assistance in encouraging better understanding among peoples of the world.

·  Dr. Ortego was recognized for her completion of the American Association of Community College’s annual Presidents Academy Summer Institute.

Showcase Presentation
Martha Sorensen, Director of Service-Learning, presented this month’s showcase report on Service-Learning at SFCC. To read more, please see the attached PowerPoint presentation.

Governance Group Reports
Staff Senate submitted minutes from its Aug. 6 meeting.

For Approval
- The Board approved the minutes for the Work Session and the Regular Board Meeting of July 24 and the Joint SFCC Governing Board/GROW Board Workshop of July 29.

- The Board approved an amendment of the President’s Contract for 2008/09.

- The Board approved an increase in RPSP for the NMSBDC.

- The Board approved a recommendation to purchase advertising to recognize former Foundation members and former/current donors.

- The Board approved Legislative Capital Outlay Requests for equipment for Health, Trades & Advanced Technology; Media, Film & Related Information Technology; and Sign Language/Interpreting Laboratory Support.

- The financial reports for July 2008 were approved.

- The Board approved the business operation recommendations for the Early Childhood Development Center.

- The Board approved the site selection for the “Tribute to Legislative Founders” Recognition Sculpture.

Matters Relating to Formal Policy
- The Board approved Policies #1-7 – Governing Membership and Vacancy, #1-10 – College Colors, #4-27 – Recruitment, Advertising and Posting of Vacancies.

Information Items.

- Janet Wise, Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations, presented the schedule of activities for the SFCC 25th Anniversary.

- The enrollment report indicated a significant increase in the number of students at SFCC.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is September 25 at 5 p.m. in the Board Room.
