Title: Traineeship Tutor / Job Coach
Reports to: Programme Manager Steps into Work

Project Background
Star Traineeshipsis a multi-agency partnership programme bringing together employers and National Star College with a shared goal of developing sustainable pathways into employment and apprenticeships for students with disabilities or health conditions. It is an unpaid Traineeship programme that supports transition from education to employment, providing opportunities to learn in the workplace and experience an extended supported work placement.
For young people the programme provides the opportunity to access the world of work with the goal of paid employment or apprenticeships at the end of the programme. The focus for students is about them becoming more independent with a high quality working experience which allows them to gain critical personal and social skills as well as qualifications.
The aims for the student are to:
- Develop their vocational skills and experience of the workplace
- Develop their English and maths skills
- Increase their confidence and the life skills needed to access employment
- Increased potential for gGainingpaid employment or an apprenticeship upon completion of the programme
They also benefit from having a tutorwho is responsible for developing personalised learning programmes and capturing learning, enabling young people to accredit their achievements. The advantages are that the tutor has access to real employer processes, documentation, work ethic and support to ensure that the evidence and learning are current and real.
Primary Job Function
- To liaise with host employers to plan the delivery of learning in the employers environment.
- To coach individuals in the workplace to develop their work skills.
- To design and deliver courses which develop learner’s skills and improve their chances of gaining sustainable employment. This may include sector specific courses including preparing to work in retail, catering, sport, hospitality as well as CV writing, job search, interview skills and customer service skills.
- To engage people with disabilities through using effective assessment tools, innovative course and lesson planning, production of resources and appropriate learning techniqueswith host employers. (Please note, all delivery takes place in the working environment of the host employers, or the community. This programme is not delivered from Ullenwood)
- To complete, and submit to deadlines, accurate administrative paperwork related to the organisation of the programmeincluding enrolment forms, registers, completion and achievement data, course folders, course evaluations, and other course and statistical information as required.
- To work with learners to promote regular attendance, punctuality and progression to further learning and employment, including following up on absences where appropriate.
Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-course preparation
- To plan a programme with the support of the Programme Manager against current course specification
- To attend corporate induction and staff meetings at the host employers.
Learning and Assessment
- To negotiate learning goals with all learners and record these on the Individual Learning Plan
- To assist learners in setting realistic outcomes and record these on an IndividualLearning Plan
- To develop learners personal and work skills in the workplace.
- To provide support and guidance to learners in the workplace.
- To provide advice and guidance and maintain positive relationships with employers.
- To design and deliver the learning programme including vocational and English and Maths content
- To deliver the course using a variety of relevant methods and approaches to enableand support individual learning styles.
- To recognise and record learner progress, achievement and progression
- To ensure equality of opportunity for all learners, by removing barriers to learning
- To encourage learner autonomy, taking into account cultural diversity
- To assess learners and give regular, clear and constructive feedback on theirprogress
- To undertake course reviews with learners
- Contribute to the Self-Assessment process
- To take part in team meetings including standardisation, training and professional
- development
Related Duties
- To ensure Schemes of Work/Session Plans and all records relating to learning and achievement are kept up to date
- To complete course registers accurately and respond to and record action taken for absences and withdrawals
- To keep records of learners’ destinations
- To take responsibility for the Health and Safety of learners and comply with Health and Safety requirements within the work area and report any concerns to the staff responsible for the site
- To facilitate access to appropriate accreditation and progression pathways and assist with marking assignments promptly where required.
- To become acquainted with, work within and promote National Star College’s framework of policies and procedures at all times (key policies include Equality and Diversity and Safeguarding)
Learner Support
- To provide impartial advice, guidance and assessment before, during and at the end of the course, including information on progression routes
Professional Development
- To attend specialist training as advised by line manager
- To keep up to date with national developments within the subject area(s) in adult teaching and learning
- To keep up to date with any identified subject specialism
General
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post

Attribute / Essential / Desirable
Experience /
- Previous experience of delivering work related learning
- Working with people with disabilities/learning difficulties
- Promotion of inclusive and differentiated learning
- Experience of liaising effectively within a multi-agency team across partner organisations
- Holds a current Driving License and is willing to travel between sites.
- Delivering differentiated learning
- Experience in customisation of work roles towards successful and sustainable employment
Qualifications /
- Relevant teaching qualification
- English and Maths qualifications at level 2 or above
- Knowledge of Training in Systematic Instruction
- Work-based or Teaching qualification
Abilities / Understand the concept of individualised learning and be able to apply its principles
Proactive and forward thinking, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Able to contribute to staff development
Communicate effectively (written, oral and interpersonal)
Use information technology confidently and competently
Have respect for and understanding of the needs of students, their families and work effectively with all stakeholders
Passionate about the role of the college in changing lives and supporting young people to develop skills for work and adult life
