Title: Picturing Polygons

Objective: The student will be able to draw and identify critical attributes of regular polygons utilizing database and graphics.

Timeline: Approximately two 45 minute class periods

Procedures:

Getting Started

  1. Open Microsoft Access by clicking Start ProgramsMicrosoftAccess.
  2. Click Blank Database in the Task Pane on the right side of the screen.
  3. Navigate to the student's folder so that the student's name is seen in the Save in box.
  4. In the Filename box, type: Polygons.
  5. Click Create.

Add Field Names and Data Types

  1. Double click Create Table by using Design View in the Database window.
  2. Type: Name of Polygon for the first Field Name.
  3. Click in the Data Type box and select Look Up Wizard.
  4. Select I will type in the values that I want.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click in the bar below Col 1 and type: Triangle.
  7. Tab to the second row and type: Square.
  8. Tab to the next row and type:Pentagon.
  9. Tab to the next row and type: Hexagon.
  10. Repeat the procedure for Septagon/Heptagon, Octagon, Nonagon, and Decagon.
  11. Click Next
  12. Click Finish.
  13. Type: Number of Sides in the second Field Name box.
  14. Select Text as the Data Type.
  15. Type: Number of Vertices for the third Field Name.
  16. Select Text as the Data Type.
  17. Type: Parallel Lines as the next Field Name.
  18. Choose Yes/No as the Data Type.
  19. Type: Perpendicular Lines for the next Field Name.
  20. Choose Yes/No for the Data Type.
  21. Follow the same procedure for Field Names Right Angles,Acute Angles,Obtuse Angles.
  22. After selecting Yes/No for the Obtuse Angles data type, type: Picture for the next Field Name.
  23. Choose OLE Object for the Data Type.

Changing the View

  1. Go to ViewDatasheet View.
  2. Click Yes to save.
  3. Type:Student Name-Polygons for the Table Name.
  4. Select No in the Primary Key window.
  5. Close the table (lowest X).
  6. In the Objects section, select Forms.
  7. Double-click Create Form by using Wizard.
  8. Click the two double right arrows.
  9. Select Next.
  10. Choose Justified.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Select a Style and click Next.
  13. Click Finish.
  14. Minimize the database. (Click the minus button at the top right of the window).

Getting Started in Microsoft Word

  1. Go to Start Programs MicrosoftWord.
  2. Go to View Toolbars Drawing. (If Drawing is already checked, DO NOT click or the check will be removed).
  3. Close the Task Pane on the right side of the screen.
  4. Go to Tools Options General tab.
  5. Uncheck the Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Go to FileSaveas.
  8. In the Save in box, navigate to the student's folder.
  9. In the Filename box, type: Polygon 1.
  10. Click Save.

Drawing Tools and Transfer to Access

  1. Click the AutoShapes button on the bottom toolbar.
  2. Select Basic Shapes and choose the Triangle button.
  3. Move the cursor to the document and click and drag to draw a triangle.
  4. Choose the down arrow beside the Fill color button (paint bucket).
  5. Select More Fill Colors and choose a color.
  6. Move the mouse to the center of the triangle and right click.
  7. Choose Copy.
  8. Click the Student Name-Polygon button (Access file) at the bottom of the screen.
  9. Right-click in the Picture section and select Paste.
  10. Fill in all other information about the triangle on the form.
  11. Click the Polygon 1 button at the bottom of the screen.
  12. Select AutoShapes and choose Basic Shapes again.
  13. Choose the Square.
  14. Move the cursor to the document and click and drag to create a square. (Hold the Shift key while clicking and dragging to draw a perfect square).
  15. Select the Fill color button and choose a color.
  16. Move to the center of the square and right-click.
  17. Select Copy.
  18. Click the Student Name-Polygon button at the bottom of the screen.
  19. Click the Add Record button in the top tool bar.
  20. Right click in the picture section of the new form and select Paste.
  21. Fill in all information about squares.
  22. Go to FileSave.
  23. Repeat for Pentagon, Hexagon, and Octagon.
  24. To draw a Septagon and a Nonagon, go to AutoShapes > Lines > Freeform .
  25. Click and draw the first side. Click again to start a different side until the shape is complete.
  26. Continue until all shapes are complete.
  27. Go to FileSave.

Printing

  1. Go to File PrintPreview to see how the forms will print.
  2. Go to FilePrint.
