ANSWER KEY: TIQA Paragraph Guided Practice TQK Handout
Topic: feeling powerless
Thematic topic statement: Peoplewho cause others to feel powerless may do a great deal of harm.
- Topic Sentence: In the story One the author clearly delineates between those who exploit their power over others versus those made to feel powerless, and she does this to assist readers in understanding the dangers of feeling powerless.
- Introduce Quote: Author Kathryn Otoshi begins her story by introducing readers to the color-character Blue, “a quiet color” who enjoys looking at the sky and splashing in puddles.
- Quote: Unfortunately, the color-character Red liked to make trouble for Blue, causing Blue to “feel bad about being Blue” when Red would taunt “Red is hot. Blue is not.” Blue not only felt blue, but sodid the other colors that never stood up to Red.
- Analysis:Otoshi’s choice to create other character-colors made to feel powerless by Red illustrates how people can become weakened by another’s name calling. Had the other colors stood up to Red earlier when Red was misbehaving, Red might have had second thoughts of taunting Blue, especially if Red knew that several colors wanted Red to stop. Otoshi implies that name-calling is not only an individual’s but also a group’s responsibility to try and stop it when it happens.
