Joint Sealant

1.01

Where so indicated on the drawings, joints are to be sealed, caulked, and pointed using a durable, general purpose, paintable, mastic. All joints must be prepared, and primed if required, in accordance with the manufacturer’s current technical data sheet.

1.02

Preparation

The joint surfaces should be accurately formed and must be thoroughly dry, clean and free from frost. Remove all laitance, curing compounds, form release agents, loose materials and any contaminating foreign matter from joint faces by grinding, grit blasting or wire brushing. The prepared sealing slot should be blown out with dry, oil-free compressed air.

New concrete must be allowed to cure for a minimum of 28 days before sealant installation.

All materials used in conjunction with the new sealant system, shall be approved by the sealant manufacturer.

1.03

Primer

Priming is not normally required on sound surfaces. Excessively friable surfaces, highly porous surfaces or those exposed which are highly alkaline should be primed with Primer 21. Ferrous metals should be treated with an anti-corrosion primer or protective coating such as Nitoprime Zincrich.

Sealant

2.01

The Sealant is to be a general purpose, gun applied, skinning sealant based on a blend of natural and synthetic oils, pigments and fillers. It should be suitable for bedding, caulking and pointing applications, as well as cable and pipe entries into buildings, and other low joint movement applications.

The sealant shall exhibit the following properties:

Movement accommodation factor: / 5% total (+/- 2.5%)
Application temperature: / Above 5oC
Skinning time: / Within approx. 36 hours
Service temperature: / Minus 40oC to +70oC
