Tips for Success with Distance Learning

To increase your chances for success in Distance Learning courses, please remember the following:

  1. Acquaint yourself with BlackBoard (DTCC Learning Management Software) and Paradigm Keyboarding program (Keyboarding site which will be used for online training and assessment). This is your 'classroom', where all communications will occur and where you will turn in your assignments. Be sure you are comfortable moving around in both interfaces. If you have a question or need support, email them at .
  2. Make sure you have access to the hardware and software required for the course. If you do not have access to the tools needed to succeed in the class, you will find it difficult to keep up with the course assignments. The Open Lab is available for your use during specific days/times; however, it may not be open during the time you have designated to work on your assignments.
  3. Be sure you meet the academic requirements and prerequisites for the online course(s) you are considering. If you do not have the foundations needed, you may struggle to succeed in the course(s).
  4. When pursuing a degree, talk to your college advisor to chart your academic program.
  5. Acquaint yourself with the instructor's delivery method of your chosen course(s).
  6. Read the course syllabus and any other information about the course. If you still have questions, make a list and email them to your instructor.
  7. Follow your instructor’s ground-rules for communications, and do not hesitate to seek further assistance and clarifications.
  8. Follow your instructor’s guidelines and timelines for submission of assignments, testing, etc. Although the course is taught online, there are specific deadlines for assignments during the semester. All of the content for the course is available from the first day. Therefore, there is no reason to miss any due date.
  9. When taking online courses you are taking on dealing with technical issues from your end. The chances of everything running smoothly may be slim. As you know, software is continually updating and conflicting with other software. Therefore, you have to be able and ready to solve those issues which will mean seeking technical support from either Paradigm (SNAP) or BlackBoard.
  10. If you are having difficulty with part of a course assignment, contact your instructor.
  11. Most importantly: Set aside regular times to study and to work on your assignments and adhere to them, keep on schedule with all your course-work, and never procrastinate.
