Tips for Helping Your Child with Homework and Study Habits

The following will help your child when they are studying and doing their homework:

1.  Designate an area where homework and studying is done every day. Homework should be done at the same time every day. ALL necessary materials should be in this area to avoid unnecessary getting up to go get supplies. HOMEWORK STUDY AREA.

2.  Make a house rule regarding when it is time to do homework/study, and when there is to be: “no” TV time, phone time, or play time.

3.  Create an after school schedule regarding homework/study time, extra curricular activities, dinner, and other things. Regularity is a key factor to academic success. Post this schedule if needed. Have a HOMEWORK DROP AREA.

4.  Organize study and homework projects: Get a large calendar, one with a lot of space and map out tests and other project due dates now or as you become aware of them. Post this calendar so that your child can see it.

5.  Teach your child that studying is more than doing the written homework assignments. Encourage your child to do things like:

a.  Take notes as he/she is reading a chapter.

b.  Learn to study tables and charts.

c.  Learn to summarize what he/she has read in his/her own words.

d.  Make flashcards for studying and review key concepts in a particular subject.

6. Encourage your child to use the dictionary and thesaurus kept at home.

7. Try to keep homework time a positive one. If needed allow one “study” break.
