South Dallas nonprofits receive national funding for high-impact HIV prevention programs;

Councilwoman Young will host a press conference to highlight
community initiatives to bolster prevention, care and treatment

Dallas - Local nonprofits, Abounding Prosperity, Inc. and AIDS Arms, Inc., are among 90 nonprofit organizations awarded funding as a part of a $216 million grant program by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Both organizations will receive grants to deliver HIV prevention strategies to those at greatest risk.

“Community-based agencies have been vital to the nation’s HIV prevention efforts since the earliest days of the epidemic. The CDC is supporting organizations that have a strong foothold in the hardest-hit communities,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, Director of the CDC National Center for HIV/AIDS.

Abounding Prosperity and AIDS Arms have partnered for over a decade to serve vulnerable individuals in the southern sector. The five-year grant funding from the CDC will allow them to increase outreach efforts and remove barriers to access services.

"We are honored that we were one of the two local agencies awarded CDC funding. The award will specifically impact services for the African-American transgender population in Dallas who are tremendously impacted by HIV infection,” said Kirk Myers, the Founding CEO of Abounding Prosperity. “There is more work to be done and we will continue to do all we can to provide services and resources to all groups that need it.”

Councilwoman Tiffinni A. Young will host a press conference with other civic leaders to increase awareness aboutthe current HIV prevention initiatives in South Dallas. “It is very criticalthat we continue to work together to improve prevention and testingbecause Dallas County is atop the state’s list of counties with the highest HIV transmission rates,”said Councilwoman Young. “The CDC funding will be an integral piece to reducing disparities and barriers to services across cultural, socioeconomic, and political lines.”
