You are a news reporter visiting the Sahel. The last time you visited was twenty years ago. Write a news story in which you explain what the environment is like now compared to back then. Explain and describe the issue of “desertification” using at least three examples. Also give at least three possible solutions to reverse the trend of desertification. / Create a multi-media art project or poster using only pictures and images from magazines and/or newspapers. You got out of the business because you no longer wanted to be part of the destruction of the rainforest. You are also a talented song writer. You were recently hired by a record company to create a song about what kinds of problems were going on in that part of Africa. Write the lyrics for a song or poem or rap that tells the world what is really going on there. What is happening to the soil? What is deforestation? How can we solve the problems there? / Create/draw a cartoon strip with a character that is traveling from one place to another in Africa. Along the way, he witnesses first-hand how water pollution is affecting the environment. Your cartoon strip must show/explain the impact that polluted water has had on… (select at least two): irrigation, trade, industry, and/or drinking water. / You are a 13 year old student living in Cairo, Egypt. Your father earns money for the family as a fisherman on the Nile River. Write a letter to your friend in America explaining what life is like where you live. Describe at least five great things about your homeland (climate, environment, etc.). Also, you must explain what is “not so great”… you must describe three causes of pollution and/or unequal distribution of water, and also describe three effects.
You have been selected to teach this class tomorrow. Create a powerpoint presentation that has at least ten slides that shows what the environmental problems are that Africans are facing today. Your final slide will be your explanation/description of how all of those problems can/could be fixed. / You have been working as a tour guide for twenty years in the tropical rain forest of Africa along the Congo River. The travel channel wants to make a tv show about the “deforestation” there. They want you to be the host of that show. Create a story/ essay that includes your viewpoint on what life has been like there and how it has been changing. What has been happening there? How can it be stopped? Give at least five examples of each. / Create a crossword puzzle or a multiple choice quiz for the students in your class. Include at least twelve clues or questions for the students to solve or answer. You must also create the answer key. Use your notes, graphic organizers and other knowledge you have about the standard (SS7G2) to help you.
