Summary
  • PhD student specialising in EAL, group work, and Intercultural Communication at Warwick University.
  • Worked in Japan for two years as a peripatetic Assistant English Language Teacher.
  • Multilingual and proactive team worker, currently organising an international academic conference in a team represented by 12 different nationalities.

Key Skills and Achievements
Effective Organisation and Administration
  • Excellent ability to plan ahead and manage my time effectively, whilst working in Japan I organised and carried out a busy travel schedule, often working in five or six different schools each week.
  • For every school trip I had to document my expenses and travel details for reimbursement.
  • I planned lessons with limited resources to mixed ability students, each day working with a different school, with different students, resources, and with different teachers.
Teamwork
  • At each different school I worked at I would have to adapt to working with a different team of teachers, and build working relationships quickly.
  • Team-teaching included working in a foreign language with a Japanese teacher, delivering lessons to up to forty demanding children.
Initiative
  • As a teacher I initiated many English-themed events and activities, including a large DVD project (interviewing over eighty people) and a Murder Mystery.
  • Self-funding my MSc and organising networking and social activities for members of the course.
Communication
  • With wide experience of travelling abroad I have become very skilled at communicating with confidence with people who I have never met, and in foreign languages.
  • Whilst in Japan I gave many presentations, training other English teachers in teaching skills and intercultural communication.
  • I have had to improve my communicative competence through working with EAL students.
Critical and Analytical Thinking
  • My BA rigorously trained me to think critically and analytically culminating in my final-year dissertation, in which I achieved 77%
  • In living abroad and analysing those experiences I have learnt to think critically and deeply about other cultures.

Personal Profile
From my first experience of teaching abroad I have been committed to English Language education, and since my experience in Japan I had become deeply interested in the role of culture in education and educational practice.
