Need to know for next Wednesday’s unit test:

FIRSTLY, you MUST have all homework assignments completed to take the test:

Vocab from 31.1

The ‘matching vocab’ worksheet for 31.1

At least two neuron diagrams completed

Classroom notes from my lectures, especially 31.3 which I did NOT assign for homework

Outline/notes from 31.2

The Neurotransmitters cases worksheet (with the A-D cases, fill in the table)

The 31.1 Assessment questions plus whatever other sections we do in class

this week or Monday; pretty sure we’ll do parts of 31.2 and 31.3

+ Be able to label the Anatomy of a Neuron diagram

+ Be able to describe a resting potential and an action potential; what do the three gates (including the Calcium gate at the axon terminal) let in/out, role of pumps, where ATP is needed or where passive diffusion occurs; definition of ‘ion’; role of myelin sheath

(more points for more vocabulary and the chain of changes)

+ Be able to describe how the electrical signal changes to a chemical signal at the axon terminal

+ Describe the three types of neuron and describe an example of where all three would be activated; why do we need THREE types?

+ Define ‘homeostasis’ and relate it to the rush of adrenaline vs normal body functions (given the terms ‘sympathetic’ and ‘parasympathetic’ as part of your autonomic nervous system)

+ Pick two regions of the brain (Cerebrum, Limbic System, Thalamus and Hypothalamus, Cerebellum or Brain Stem) and give three facts about each.

+ Know what is meant by the terms ‘excitatory’ and ‘inhibitory’ neurotransmitters.

+ Describe at least one way drugs of addiction or prescription drugs affect the way neurotransmitters behave at the synapse.

For advanced students there may be more ways to earn extra points, if you have time.
