This year each student in our class will have the opportunity to be the Star of the Sea! During this week we will take time to celebrate what makes this person special! Each day we will have a special activity devoted to this student and will end the week honoring them with a special book. A note will come home the Friday before it is your child’s turn to be the Star of the Sea. Below is an explanation of what happens each day.
Friday Before /
A note will be sent home letting families know that it is your child’s turn to be the Star of the Sea on the Friday before their week. Over the weekend the child is asked to complete a Star of the Sea poster and get to take home one of our class sea creatures. They will be able to take pictures with the sea creature and write in our journal to share with the class. See examples from Mrs. Maher.
Monday / Star of the Sea Journal
The Star of the Sea will start their week by returning our sea creature and their journal entry. They can share with the class by showing the pictures in the book and what they did with the sea creature over the weekend!! (Please don’t stress about having a photograph ready over the weekend. A photo can be added to the journal at any time.)
Tuesday / Star of The Sea Share
On Tuesday, our Star of the Sea will share his or her All About Me poster. The poster will be laminated and hung in the classroom for the class to view throughout the week.
Wednesday / Favorite Picture Book
Our Star of the Sea will bring in a picture book for Mrs. Maher to share with the class.
Thursday / Estimation Jar
On this day the student will share the Estimation Jar with the class. The estimation jar comes home the weekend before in the Star of the Sea bag. Use your imagination to fill it with the item of your choice! Then make sure to count how many of that item fit in the jar and write the number on a slip of paper and tape it the inside of the jar lid. On Thursday, students will get the chance to estimate how many of the item(s) are in your jar and create charts to explain our data.
Examples of estimation jar items used in the past: cotton balls, pennies, pasta, lollipops
/ Our “Star of the Sea is Great” book!
For homework each week your child will draw a picture and write something nice to the Star of the Sea. These will be created into a book for your Star of the Sea to keep. Each child will receive a note from everyone. This will be laminated and brought home the following week.
