This PowerPoint presentation was designed to provide some basic information to people who are interested in learning more about registering a name for a rhododendron or an azalea cultivar. There is also a secondary motivation, and that is to show some of the incredible diversity in the genus Rhododendron. The presentation has the following eight sections:

1.  Introduction: Why registration is important, decisions to be made when deciding if a cultivar should be registered, some rules of nomenclature, the registration process, and contact points.

2.  Getting Ready / Materials: Application forms and instructions that can be obtained from the ARS, color chart options, measuring systems, additional resources, and some of the background information needed before starting the application process.

3.  Inflorescence Structure: Definitions and examples illustrating a few botanical terms, types of trusses, and how to count flowers in truss.

4.  Floral Details: Examples of corolla shapes, flower forms, and markings such as borders. blotches, and spots.

5.  Understanding Color: Background on color and introduction to vocabulary.

6.  Evaluating Flower Color: Various color charts and several examples showing how to evaluate flower color.

7.  Foliage Description: Leaf anatomy, essential leaf measurements for the application, diverse leaf forms and surfaces including examples of scales, hairs, and indumentum.

8.  Plant Habit and Closing Comments: Plant habits, bloom times, and other possible distinguishing characteristics. Acknowledgments and other closing comments.

The CD has approximately 500 slides and well over 300 separate images. There are several ways to review the presentation, one as the full file, but also we provide four separate units of approximately equal length in case someone wants to review certain portions separately instead of going through the entire presentation. These are the files on the CD:

·  A-Rhododendron Registration-Part 1-2.pps – Unit A, the slides from parts 1 and 2

·  B-Rhododendron Registration-Part 3-4.pps – Unit B, the slides from parts 3 and 4

·  C-Rhododendron Registration-Part 5-6.pps – Unit C, the slides from parts 5 and 6

·  D-Rhododendron Registration-Part 7-8.pps – Unit D, the slides from parts 7 and 8

·  Rhododendron Registration-All.pps - This is the entire presentation in one file, and could be suitable for a first view or a chapter presentation.

To review any of the files on this CD, the user will need a computer that has the free PowerPoint viewer program installed. Just click on the filename and allow the PowerPoint viewer software to load and execute the file.

Note: These files are quite large and contain many images. Do not be concerned if the screen turns dark for a minute or two as the file loads into the computer and gets ready to be displayed. Units A-D will load faster than the full file.

We hope this presentation will be helpful to those who want to learn more about the registration process. A copy of the Registration Form and Instructions is available on the ARS website: www.rhododendron.org
