1) For quite a few months if not a year, the troop committee has given consideration to the future of transportation in our troop. Because we are about to make a big decision, I just wanted to let everyone know what is going on and give you the chance to ask any questions and present concerns. The $.02 description of what is going on follows here. Most recently (actually months ago) our 1991 International bus failed a required DOT safety inspection with repairs to get it road worthy reaching the price of $5000. Even though this expenditure will make it road worthy, it will still be 26 years old with over the road performance and reliability concerns. Thanks to benefactors and you allowing the troop to benefit from your Kroger purchases, we are in a position to proceed. After considering moving to the use of rental vans and parental vehicles instead of a bus, fixing the bus or getting a newer bus, it looks like we are close to buying a 2004 International from St. Xavier High School for the price of repairing the current bus. It will need some adaptation to change its classification away from school bus and there could be some minor repairs that we have to spring for. There will also be some physical labor work with which we may come to you for help as we craft the bus that will support the troop for another 15ish years. The deal is not quite done yet, but even if we do not buy this bus. we look forward to safer more comfortable trips for everyone involved and to working together to put the Troop 243 stamp on our new bus. If you have questions and concerns about the plans, feel free to write to me with any questions and if I cannot give you an answer I will have a person call you who can. You can simply reply to this email with your questions.

2) In order to use the proposed bus, we have to have drivers. Our drivers have to have a class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with passenger and air brakes endorsements. Troop 243 will pay the cost of you obtaining this license as well as provide permit driving support and test support using our bus. We will also pay for the biannual DOT physical that is required and anything else supporting your CDL. Frank Hulsman will be coordinating drivers so please contact him if you can help!

3) Troop 243 has the opportunity to help staff a parking lot near Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium. We have enough volunteers to help out at the 9/16 game vs. Clemson, thank you! We are looking for volunteers to staff the parking lot for approximately 4 hours for the 9/23 game vs. Kent State and the 9/30 game vs. Murray State. After that, there will still be 3 more games. 10/14 vs Boston College, 11/11 vs Virginia, and 11/18 vs. Syracuse.

It would be helpful if every scout and parent helped during at least one game. Initially, we thought it best for older scouts and we're not sure how younger scouts can help. We definitely need parents, even if your son does not help.

To help, please let Frank Hulsman ( or 502 298-5340) know which game you can help out at. NOTE: Game times are not yet set.

We expect to use the proceeds from this effort to help pay for the bus we are purchasing from St. X High School.

4) From Mr. Berendsen: “I need volunteers to setup dining flies the next two weekends. Big jobs.

Have them Email me or see me on Wednesday. Thanks, Mr. Berendsen

5) Attached is what I think will be the last version of the August activity report. Changes will only be accepted through September 15th then August is a lock so check it out, even if you’ve sent me corrections already. If something is not on this report that you think should be, talk to an adult or scout who was responsible for doing attendance and get them to give me a list. Please do not contact me because I will be of no help.

6) The 2nd installment for the Northern Tier trip will be due on Sept 20 and is $300.

If you would like to be removed from this email list or change your email address, please reply here and I will take care of it. Please note that the email system does not tell me if you have an inaccurate email address so I have no way to know if you change your email address.
