This Activity Planwillenablestudents tounderstandtheimportance of customer serviceinthe automotive industry.Customers arenotnormally charged for courtesy checks,but these

inspections may often reveal problems thatneed tobe repaired. Mostofthesechecksaredoneroutinelyduringanoilandfilter service.

Thevehicleinspectionchecklistsfoundat the endof this Activity Plan maybe usedformaintenancechecks.Inspection checklists are normallybasedonavehicle’sservicerequirements anditsmileage. These inspectionchecklists correspondtothe servicechecklistsfoundin anyvehicle owner’smanual.

Assumptions

•Students will havelittle or no prior knowledge of maintenance or repairsof a motorvehicle.

•Students willhavebeen taught howto safely liftavehicle.

DiscussionofActivities

1.CourtesyCheck—A visual or “hands off”inspectionis done quickly withlittle or nothingbeingtouched. Safetyitems like lights and wipers are checked, along withsomecourtesycleaning.

2.UndertheHoodInspection—This isaquickvisualof itemsthat canbecheckedunderthehood,forexamplefluidlevels.Thisgeneralinspectionismore in-depth thanthevisualinspectionand can include some minor work.

3.UnderCarInspection—A quick visualof items that canbecheckedunder thecar,likeexhaustandtires.Thisinspection can involvemoredetailedadjustmentsandrepairsthanthevisual inspectionand theunderthehood inspection.

At theendof this ActivityPlan,checklists areincludedfor eachof these services. Thechecklistscan be introducedprogressively,but could also be usedinconjunctionwithotherlessons(e.g.,ActivityPlan14:Lifting Vehicles).

Activity

Theteachershouldfirstdemonstrate or describe theskillsasthestudentsobserve.Thenhavestudentswork in pairs to display the skills learned onthe sameor adifferentvehicle. Studentsshould alternate whendoing theskills, so thesame students are notdoingall thework.

1.Vehicle should bewashed and cleanedoutto allowfor agoodinspection of both the insideandoutsideofthe vehicle.This is a valuablecustomer service that studentsshouldlearn.

2.A work orderneedsto be filledoutwithalltherelevantvehicleandcustomerinformation.This informationis necessary for step #4.

3.Serviceinspection sheets should be completedasrequired.

4.Wheels should be removedsothatbrakes and related components can alsobe inspected.

5.Any items that needattention arisingfrom theinspection suchas belts, hoses, lights,brakesor oil changeshould belistedon thework orderalong witha repairestimate.

EvaluationGuidelines

Thefollowingcomponents oftheactivitycanbe assessed:

•Completion, legibilityand accuracy ofeach work orderand serviceinspection sheet

•Estimatescanbeevaluated foraccuracy, based onthe detailed listof repairs to be done.

•Quality of work doneto completethe serviceor repair

•Quality of washing anddetailing of the vehicle (inside andout)

•If studentsare workingin groups,one student canbedesignated as agroup leaderandcan be evaluated on leadershipandorganizationalskills.
