Thirty-Second Sunday

“Brothers and sisters: May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word… but the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.”
Life is a gift. How we live it depends upon the free will God has given us. When we consider all the gifts we have received, life, health, faith, family, gifts great and small, we are grateful. Gifts we have received are to be used for the common good.
The word of God today informs us of a gift we have received and are asked to give away. It is not costly, not precious. It was not earned, but showered upon us. There is someone waiting for and in need of this gift. Its name is encouragement.
How many people around us need to hear an encouraging word. Circumstances of life find people weighed down with sickness, loss of work, a difficult home situation, addictions of every sort. For many the first step may be a simple presence, a helping hand, and the words “I understand.’
Like a smile it is a gift that is offered, yet is not lost but still kept. It has been given to us as a grace and as we utilize it, we too become stronger in every good deed and word. The classic song ‘Home on the Range’ reminds us there is never heard a discouraging word when we as people of faith encourage one another.

On Tuesday, November 9th, please come to Vespers with Archbishop Timothy Dolan at 6:30 PM in St. Joseph’s Greenwich Village Church. Archbishop Dolan will give a homily on Dorothy Day, someone for whom he has a special place in his heart. This timely Vespers service in the church where she often prayed falls the day after Dorothy’s birthday and just weeks before the 30th anniversary of her death on November 29th. It will include music by some of the best professionals St. Joseph’s has to offer. A reception will follow in St. Joseph’s school auditorium. Fr. Vincent DeLucia, OP has been elected the Prior of St. Mary's Dominican Priory at Yale in New Haven. He will be leaving us on November 9. Our pastor, Fr. John McGuire, OP, has been appointed interim director of the Catholic Center at NYU. The Parish thanks Fr. Vincent for his many years of service to St. Joseph's and wishes him the best as he moves back to his native New Haven.

Jewish, Christian and Muslim Perspectives: Fall McGinley Lecture, Fordham University
Rev. Patrick J. Ryan, S.J., the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University, will deliver his Fall McGinley lecture, “Prophetic Faith and the Critique of Tradition: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Perspectives,” on Monday evening, November 15 at 6 p.m. in the 12th-floor Lounge in the Lowenstein Center at the Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan. Also with Rabbi Daniel Polish, Ph.D., of Congregation Shir Chadash, Poughkeepsie and Professor Amir Hussein, Ph.D. of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Covenant House’s 20th Annual Candlelight Vigil
On November 16, 2010 Covenant House International, the largest privately-funded agency in the Americas that provides food, shelter, immediate crisis care, and an array of other important services to homeless, throwaway, and runaway kids, will hold its 20th Annual Candlelight Vigil.
The Vigil will transform Times Square into a beacon of hope and solidarity for all homeless youth. Covenant House kids and hundreds of their advocates will march from Covenant House’s New York shelter to Times Square and send a simultaneous message in support of thousands of homeless youth across the U.S. who are just trying to survive on their own, one night at a time.

The Epiphany Catholic Young Adults and the Cathedral of St Patrick Young Adults invite you to a screening of the film, "Nine Days That Changed the World."
This documentary film, produced by Gingrich Productions, tells the remarkable true story of Pope John Paul II’s pilgrimage to his native Poland from June 2-9, 1979. This visit alone did indeed change the world, and initiated the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, but it also changed the spiritual culture of the world for the 20th century!
We hope you will join us for this screening and learn more about our beloved JPII, whose presence and love is still felt by many today!
