April 13, 2015 Week 29 Mrs. Downs/Room 27 Seacliff Elementary

·  We begin SBAC testing (state testing) the week of April 27th.

·  All field trip paperwork and payment were due March 20th. If you haven’t sent these in yet, please do so as soon as possible. J If your child takes any medication (even allergy medication), they will need a Dr.’s approval. Have your child ask me for the paperwork if needed.

·  Our field trip is Tuesday, April 21st-Wednesday, April 22nd. Students need to be at school promptly at 8:05 in line with their luggage/pillow, disposable lunch, and any backpack they might be carrying (for water/hikes/bus games). Labeling your child’s items with masking tape is a good idea. J We leave campus at 8:30 am and return on the 22nd at approximately 2:30pm. I will send out a text when we are about 15-20 minutes away from school. There is no cellular service, so please no electronic devices. Also, as a reminder, no food, other than the first day’s lunch.

·  Jog-a-Thon is April 28th!! We are looking forward to this fun event to support our student programs. Students’ orange folders and money is due this Friday, April 17th.

Homework:

·  Due to next week’s field trip, the weekly packet will be given on Tuesday(4/14), and is due on Friday, April 24th. (No spelling quiz this week)

Language Arts:

·  PRD Novel Test retake is on Tuesday (rescheduled due to absence)

·  When you have a chance, read your child’s pioneer journals in Google Classroom, and learn about the challenges of moving out west in the mid-1800’s. J

·  Beginning the novel, By the Great Horn Spoon this week. This is an exciting tale about two gold seekers on a mission to strike it rick in the 1849 California Gold Rush! This is such a fun book to read, and one the kids’ favorites. Our first quiz is on Friday, April 24th, on chapters 1-5(tbd).

·  Accelerated Reader: Home reading goal is 12 points by April 30th; reading log due April 30th; grade level AR goal is 105 cumulative points by end of third trimester

Math:

·  www.math-drills.com for practice sheets.

·  MIND class goal for this week: 80% completion

·  Geometry Test retake on Thursday, April 16th. This is not a particularly challenging unit, but there is A LOT of memorization in conversion and naming of geometric angles and shapes. Students should be making flash cards to help them study the terms/rules.

·  We began our next unit in geometry on circles and angles. We are practicing our protractor skills in this chapter! J

·  Math quiz on Thursday (study guide comes home on Tuesday; all classwork and notes are for study as well)

·  Math Test on Thursday, 4/23 (study guide comes home on Friday)

·  Ask your child to show you their math notes from class this week. I will post pictures of the notes on our website for any needed organization/clarification.

Social Studies:

·  We finished Ch. 4 on the Mexican Era the week before break. Our test is this Friday, April 17th. We will review this week; study guide comes home on Monday.

·  This week we finish our diseno maps and letters to Governor Downs, while practicing our hand as traders in the Hide and Tallow trade during the Mexican Era.

·  We begin Chapter 5 on the Gold Rush later this week. This coincides well with our last novel, By the Great Horn Spoon! Students will learn about the discovery of gold and its impact on the development of California.

Science:

·  We return to science and our last unit, rocks and minerals, the week of April 27th.

SPARK P.E.

We have Physical Education on Wednesdays and Fridays.
