A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

ESL 051 is a high intermediate class that focuses on preparing you for college preparation courses in addition to giving you the opportunity to hone and improve your skills in English for professional and social situations. We will be practicing all skill areas in English, but the main focus will be on reading and writing. Classwork will include a variety of reading material, writing assignments, groupwork, grammar review and expansion activities.

B. LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main goal behind this course is to provide a supportive, fun and enjoyable atmosphere for you to practice and improve your English skills in a variety of ways for professional, social and academic purposes. In this course you will:

improve your reading ability and vocabulary by studying various articles and using the vocabulary you have learned in them

improve your writing ability by studying and practicing various types of writing, including academic paragraphs

review and put to use grammar you have learned before as well as learn new grammar

broaden your ability to think critically about a range of issues and apply this type of thinking in speaking, reading, writing, and listening to English

practice listening to English through lecture, discussion, video, and other formats

practice speaking English by participating in a variety of classroom speaking activities

MISSING GRADED IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS and QUIZZES

There will be no “make up” tests, quizzes, or graded in-class assignments except in emergency situations. You will always know ahead of time when there will be a graded assessment in class. Please email or call me if you have an emergency during one of these graded assessments. Missing a graded assignment will result in a zero (0) grade for that assignment.

ATTENDANCE

Acceptable excused absences include doctor’s appointments, illnesses, and emergencies. Excused absences are on the honor’s policy, but keep in mind that each class you miss may set you behind as the course progresses. If you are absent from a class, you are expected to call one of your classmates to get any homework assignments and/or handouts that you may have missed during your absence.

D. GRADING and EVALUATION

E. PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is using someone else’s work and calling it your own. This is a form of cheating and is not allowed in American colleges. Plagiarism can cause you to fail a course. To avoid plagiarism, do not copy from books, the Internet, someone else’s homework, or any other source.
