Third Annual Maine / New Hampshire State 6 Wicket Tournament
Croquet In Maine, The Way Life Should Be
June 24-June 27, 2010
The third annual Maine / New Hampshire State 6 wicket Croquet Tournament wrapped up Sunday afternoon, June 27, 2010 under bright sunny skies on the championship sized croquet lawn at the Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth, Maine. Twenty players competed this year in four flights and the level of play was very competitive in all flights. The tournament started on Wednesday evening with an opening reception at the Woodlawn Museum where all players received a croquet shirt with the Woodlawn Croquet logo on them, followed by a BBQ dinner catered by Crazy Dave`s Pit BBQ in the sleigh barn.
Play commenced on Thursday morning at 8AM with the Championship Flight competing at the home of Mary Cheney Gould and Marcia Chapman at Tapley Cove on the Bagaduce River in Brooksville, and the first, second, and third flight competed on the [2] half courts at Woodlawn Croquet. The first round of play consisted of “Waterford” Doubles in all flights in which each player played one game as partner with each of the other 4 players in the flight. The singles medalist round followed with each player playing against each other in the flight. Upon completion of the 8 games, each player`s won and lost record was calculated over all the games, both doubles and singles, to determine the standings. The first place player in each flight went directly to the finals and the second and third place players played in a semi finals match with the winner advancing to the finals. The championship games were all played on the full sized croquet lawn at Woodlawn where the grass was in great condition. With the farmers market going on at the same time on the grounds of the Woodlawn Museum, there were lots of spectators viewing the action. The weather gods provided ideal weather conditions for the entire tournament.
In the third flight, Gary Thomas of California and a summer resident of Ellsworth bested Tim McCormick of Ellsworth for the 2nd. straight straight year but Tim gave Gary a very competitive game with the final score being 10 to 8. Second flight started out with Charles Alexander of Ellsworth having a huge lead on Sturgis Haskins of Sorrento but Sturgis made his move at the end of the game to close the gap with Charles prevailing with a score of 19 to 16. Jamie Boulette from Oakland, Maine, fresh off his first flight victory at the Berkshire Invitational in Lenox, Mass. , beat Diane Saunders of South Carolina and Boothbay Harbor, Maine by a score of 21 to 7.
