Fifth Sunday of Easter

Acts 14:21-27 Rv 21:1-5a Jn 13:31-33a, 34-35 (54)

“They (Paul and Barnabas) gave their disciples reassurances, and encouraged them to persevere in the faith with this instruction: ‘We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God.’ In each church they installed elders and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith… ‘This is how all will know you for my disciples: your love for one another.’”

Barnabas as well as the first Christians. We are living the ‘Year of The life of the early church reflects a certain faith, that of Paul and Faith’ commemorating fifty years since the opening of the Second Vatican Council.

Although it seems the change in our worship has had the greatest effect upon us, the two great documents on the Church and the Church in the Modern World have allowed us to look within at our Catholic life and outside as we are called to be a leaven in our world.

More acutely aware of our role in the life of the church as baptized members, may we accept the reassurances and encouragement offered by the two apostles, and earnestly try to put into practice the faith we profess. Paul and Barnabas did, their disciples did, so do we in this special year proclaimed by Benedict XVI. One simple step, a first step, is to invite someone who has grown weak in the faith, to return to the church with you. If every Catholictook such a step, what a difference. Do you need reassurance? Does someone else need encouragement? The ‘Year of Faith’ calls us all to pray for lapsed Catholics, befriend them, and eagerly invite them to rejoin their family.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” Now there’s the rub: “As I have loved you.” In the first reading, Paul and Barnabas tell the disciples, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the reign of God.” This is how Jesus loved us. But then we have the second reading offering a vision of “a new heaven and a new earth” where “there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain.” Maybe loving as Jesus did is a pretty good deal after all. Let’s give it a try.

ST. JOSEPH’S POLO SHIRTS

Beginning next week, we will be offering for sale our exclusive cotton polo shirts with embroidered coat of arms of the parish. We have the much coveted size “small” once again, this time in light blue. The cost of these irresistible shirts is $35 for one, $60 for two.

The Cardinal’s Appeal

We are currently at the $35,000 mark of our total goal for $70,000 for the 2013 Cardinal’s Appeal. We would make this goal if every parishioner pledged or gave at least something to this important campaign. So far, only 48 have participated.

Besides helping poor parishes, the church’s outreach to the elderly and young is dependent on the generosity of those who are better off.

In addition, this is our opportunity to repay the Archdiocese pervious subsidy of St. Joseph’s as one of those poor parishes.

Today each of you will be given a pledge envelop. Please use it to pledge (or give) something to this campaign. It is our way of sharing in the Church’s mission to our broader world of those in need.

COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This Collection supports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region still struggling in the aftermath of atheistic Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and aid, your donations help restore the strength of the Church in the region. Please give generously to the Collection next week. Visit (search “Church in Central and Eastern Europe”) to learn more.

FILM FESTIVALS

Parishioner, Robert Carreon is among the team of producers who will premiere Bridegroom at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by Linda Bloodworth Thomason, creator of Designing Women, the movie gives an intensely personal edge to the ongoing debate over the legal rights of same-sex couples. It also does an excellent job of addressing what Cardinal Dolan recently spoke to when he said we have to do a better job of reaching our t the GLBT Community. Three of the four Tribeca screenings have been sold out. To purchase tickets to the April 28th noon screening, contact Tribeca Film Festival.

We are also proud of our parishioner Theresa Loong whose documentary “Every Day Is a Holiday” will be premiered at the Montclair Film Festival on Saturday, May 4th.

This is a documentary about her father’s survival in a Japanese POW Camp, his conversion to Catholicism and journey to the USA.
