AT KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

The University of North Carolina of School of the Arts and the Kennedy Center are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at Kennedy Center. Now in its 16th year, the William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowship at the Kennedy Center seeks to provide emerging theater artists with a wide variety of experiences bridging their academic training with the professional theater community. The Kennedy Center Fellows are placed on projects with theater companies in Washington, D.C. including The Shakespeare Theatre, Folger Theatre, Studio Theatre, Theater J, Arena Stage and others, and with partner theaters across the country, such as Alliance Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Portland Center Stage and South Coast Rep. Up-to five candidates will be selected for a Fellowship beginning Labor Day 2017 for a residency period to be mutually determined. For information about the Kennedy Center, visit

The Fellowship is open to graduates and current students of UNCSA’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs from the Schools of Drama and Design and Production who were members of the classes of 2012-2017. For the 2017-2018 Fellowships, directors, stage managers, and all disciplines of design will be considered. Actors with strong cross-disciplinary or theatre-in-education interests will be considered. Individuals interested in performing arts management fellowships/internships would need to apply directly to the Kennedy Center at current Fellows represent scenic and costume design and performance. Students and graduates of UNCSA’s high school program are not eligible. Alumni who have already been awarded any fellowship through the William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowship Programs are also not eligible.

Application Criteria

Applicants must be a member of graduating classes 2012-2017.

Candidates must demonstrate strong communication, time management and organizational skills in order to maintain a complex schedule; a desire to learn and grow as an artist and individual; curiosity and interest in the DC theatre community; must be self-motivated; and be highly collaborative.

  • Salary of $700 per week
  • Reimbursement for moving expenses (up to $500 each way) is provided to and from the Fellowship
