The PEAS Education Specialist Fellowship Programme

In Sub-Saharan Africa the majority of young people do not have access to an affordable, quality secondary education. PEAS is an innovative social enterprise working to address the urgent need for expanded access to quality secondary schooling in Uganda and Zambia

PEAS runs one of the fastest growing networks of secondary schools in Africa, with 28 schools in Uganda and 2 in Zambia. We expand access to education while also ensuring young people leave our schools with better than expected outcomes. We are passionate about providing quality education and some of the highest performing schools in Uganda are now PEAS schools.

If you are interested in helping improve the life chances of children from low-income families in Uganda and Zambia then this programme is the place for you.

PEAS’ Education Specialist programme is an exciting placement that exposes top talent from the global education sector to a high-performing education development organisation. We offer educationalists the opportunity to both bring their expertise to our education teams in Uganda and Zambia, and learn from the expertise of Ugandan or Zambian education experts.

PEAS Education Specialists will work with PEAS Uganda or PEAS Zambia education teams to provide technical assistance to PEAS delivery teams. PEAS’ delivers interventions across a range of technical area. These are summarised in the table below. Specific responsibilities will depend on the experience and interests of each Education Specialist.

Technical area / Purpose
Leadership development / Developing autonomous and accountable school leadership.
Leadership development opportunities are provided to school leaders throughout the year. These include training opportunities, peer-to-peer exchanges and mentorship.
Teacher training / Improving student achievement through high quality teaching.
Teacher training is delivered through regional or central workshops and in-service school-based sessions.
Curriculum development / Delivering a balanced and well-rounded curriculum in schools.
Teachers deliver Life Skills and Literacy programmes as well as the national curriculum. The Life Skills programme helps ensure that students are equipped with critical life skills and knowledge in order to define and lead a fulfilling and socially responsible life. The literacy programme in Uganda has been designed to both directly improve literacy skills and also help students to apply these skills to other academic subjects.
Child protection / Ensuring that all children are safe from harm and that their rights are fully realised.
PEAS schools are responsible for promoting child-safe practices and protecting children from harm, abuse, neglect and exploitation in any form.
Community engagement and school governance / Working with families and communities to create a local environment where young people are supported to enrol, attend, complete and succeed at school.
PEAS schools conduct community engagement activities in order to generate support for education and encourage active participation from local stakeholders. Community engagement activities include holding community meetings to build awareness of particular issues, setting up and collaborating with school governing bodies and visiting local primary schools.

The PEAS Zambia programme is currently operating at a smaller scale than PEAS Uganda. The PEAS Zambia team is lean and, as in any start-up environment, each team member needs to be highly adaptable and flexible. The Education Specialist role in Zambia is therefore likely to cover a wider range of responsibilities (e.g. monitoring and evaluation) and evolve during the placement.
