The Weather Box Level Qmaking Predictions

Seatwork- Wednesday__12

Have you ever read a book and guessed the ending? Have you ever watched a movie and known what would happen next? If you did, you were making a prediction.

Read the story about some fourth graders. Then answer

the questions IN NEAT AND COMPLTETE SENTENCES!

Steve challenged Julie to a race at recess. Steve loved to race, and he usually won. Julie didn’t like to lose races so she agreed to the contest on one condition. “I’ll race with an apple on my head, and you’ll have to balance an orange on yours.”

“That’s fine with me,” said Steve. “I’ll win no matter what.”

“Here are the rules,” Julie explained. “If the fruit falls off your head, you’re allowed to pick it up and put it back. However, you have to continue racing from where it fell off. Mike can watch to make sure no one cheats.”

On the call, “Ready, set, go !” Julie and Steve began walking as fast as they could. It wasn’t easy. About every three steps or so, one racer lost his or her piece of fruit. Before they were halfway around the track, both racers were spending more time picking up their fruit than actually racing. It also didn’t help when they started laughing.

“Hurry! The bell’s going to ring!” Mike jumped up and down. Just then, Julie and Steve noticed that someone else was watching the race. It was their Teacher, Mr. O’Hara. He was laughing as hard as they were.

1) Why does Julie want two racers to balance fruit on their heads?______

______

2) Predict what happens when the school bell rings at the end of recess? ______

______

3) How do you think the race will end? ______

The World's Greatest Contralto
by Babette Albin

Read the story, then complete the next page.
"Come and hear the baby contralto," the advertisement read. The baby was Marian Anderson and she was only eight. Marian Anderson was born in 1902 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the time she was six she was singing in the junior choir of her church. When she was eight she taught herself to read music and play the piano. In junior high school Marian took voice lessons and sang for local churches and other groups.

In 1925 Marian entered a singing contest. To her surprise she won. The large audience at her recital responded with thunderous applause. But in spite of this success, the racism and segregation in the United States at that time meant that bookings were few and far between. So when Marian won an award to study in Germany, she jumped at the chance. For the next five years, she sang in countries all over Europe.

In 1936, Marian was invited to sing at the White House for President and Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt. After that, she sang in concert halls all across the country. If the hall was segregated, she made a point of bowing first to the African American audience.

In 1954 Marian Anderson became the first African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. At the end of her historic performance there was a standing ovation.

The Weather Box Level Q Genre: Science Fiction

Seatwork- Thursday

Read the science Fiction story below. Then answer the questions that follow.

The shuttle bounced and jostled its passengers as it entered the Earth's atmosphere. Jason kept his face glued to the small side window as they glided in toward Earth. He'd made this trip only once before, but he didn't have a window seat that time.
He'd been born in the lunar colony, and his first visit to the Earth had been several months ago. That was when his family had come down to visit his cousins in the PHC, an oceanic colony.
Instead of looking through the heavy transparent domes to the lifeless landscape of the moon, he'd looked out his window in the PHC at a living ocean. Instead of a static landscape, the ocean view was constantly changing.
The shuttle slowly reduced altitude, and landforms became visible, followed by cities and the ocean waves. For just a few moments, Jason saw a sight that made him catch his breath. Colors arched up into the sky in a display that his teacher had once described. He'd never seen one before. It must be a rainbow.
Long shadows on the ground pointed like arrows in the direction the shuttle traveled. Raindrops splattered against the shuttle's hull and turned instantly to steam as they made their final approach. The heat generated in the shuttle's hull would super heat the ocean water, so the passengers would transfer to another vehicle that would take them to the Permanent Human Colony. Super-heated water could disrupt the ocean environment that the PHC was trying to restore.
The transition from land to ocean was quick. The PHC was in relatively shallow water.
Jason's uncle and aunt met him as he entered the underwater colony. He would stay in Tim's room while the rest of the class stayed with family members of the other exchange students. It was going to be an adventure staying in the PHC, but at least he'd be staying with family. Many of his classmates were staying with strangers.
That evening as they ate supper, Jason told his aunt and uncle about the rainbow he had seen. He sighed as he remembered its beauty.
"Why can't we have rainbows on the moon?" he asked.
"No rain," said his uncle. "You need water droplets to act as miniature prisms."
"Oh," said Jason. He felt stupid. He should have thought of that.
"No reason you should have thought of it," said his uncle. "Water isn't constantly around you in the lunar colony as it is here."
"Did you know that there is such a thing as a lunar rainbow?" asked his aunt. "It happens here sometimes after a rain on the night of a full moon. It's much fainter and rare to see. Many people don't even know it can happen."
"That's pretty neat," said Jason with a smile. "I'm learning all kinds of things in the PHC, and we haven't even started our classes yet!"

Lunar Swap
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Lori walked into the large observation room. She knew Tim would be there, but she liked watching the work that went on outside of the Permanent Human Colony structure. It was fun to watch the fish as they interacted with the men in their scuba gear.
This was the third season that she and her family had lived and worked here at the PHC. Tim and his family lived and worked here, too. In fact, his father was the director of the colony. Lori knew that if there was anything new happening around the facility, Tim would know about it.
"Hi, Tim," said Lori. "What's going on?"
"Not much. The crew has just about finished the new docking bay. They have been working on it all summer," said Tim. "Since we have been on summer break, I have been able to give them a hand during part of the installation."
"Oh, what did you do to help?" Lori asked with skepticism in her voice.
"I have been keeping the inventory on all of the supplies and parts that have been shipped to us. In fact, I wrote a program to help us keep track of supplies. It has helped to increase our efficiency and speed up the construction," said Tim as he entered some data on his handheld computer.
"Wow, that's pretty cool. So, are you about ready for school to start again for this year?" said Lori as she moved over to the window to get a better view of the scuba divers.
"Yes, I guess so. It's just that I enjoy the summer breaks so much that I hate to have to go back to the routine of the school year." Tim put his computer on the table and turned to look at Lori. "Although this year is going to be a lot of fun, I think."
"Oh, why do you think this year will be any different from any other year?" Lori asked.
"Can you keep a secret?" Tim asked.
Lori nodded her head.
"Dad told me that they are going to try something new this year. We are the first class to get to participate in a new swap program."
"Swap program? What does that mean?" Lori asked.
"You remember last year when my cousin Jason was here for a visit? As you know, he lives on the lunar colony. Well, this year we get to swap with Jason's class for two weeks. That means we will be studying on the moon, and Jason's class will be here at our ocean floor colony. Of course, everyone will have to get permission from their parents, but Dad said he has already talked to everyone, and the parents are all really excited about it."
Lori jumped up and down with excitement. "Wow, Tim that is great. When will we get to go?"
"All of the details haven't been worked out yet, but I think it will be a couple of weeks after school starts."
Tim saw the excitement in Lori's face and gestures. He said, "You can't tell anyone else yet. This is supposed to be a surprise, and our teacher is going to announce it in class. If you tell anyone, I will get in big trouble."
"You can trust me, Tim. I won't tell anyone," said Lori. "I have always wanted to visit the lunar colony. Now, I get to go to school there for two weeks. This will be the best field trip ever."
