“The Star-Spangled Banner” Text Set Final Assignment

Choose one of the following three assignments:

1. CREATE A NEW NATIONAL ANTHEM with letter to the President

Rewrite the existing National Anthem (“Star Spangled Banner”) or create a new National Anthem using evidence from all texts to create a song. It must have a similar theme to the majority of the texts read. Add a letter, addressed to the President, showing why your song should be the new national anthem. Letter must be in paragraph format and must be an engaging analysis of why the song should be adopted and the theme of the song.

GUIDELINES:

a. Song must have a minimum of four verses

b. Song must share a similar theme to that covered in the texts we read

c. Song can be to any tune you like.

d. Letter must be in proper letter format

e. Letter must be at least 5 sentences and in paragraph format

f. Letter must include why the song should be adopted as the new National Anthem (list at least two valid reasons)

g. Letter must include the theme of the song and how it relates to documents we read in class.

2. FIND A SIMILAR THEMED ARTICLE with analysis

Choose a phrase or theme that reflects what was studied in the articles. Find a story, article, or poem that has the same theme. Write a two-paragraph (at least 5 sentences per paragraph) analysis of how the piece that you found is similar to the texts studied, citing evidence from the texts.

GUIDELINES:

a.  You must bring in the article, story, or poem that has the similar theme

b.  Article, story, or poem should be school appropriate

c.  Article should have notes on it showing the similarities and similar theme

d.  Analysis should be at least 2 paragraphs, in proper format

e.  Analysis should include citations from texts studied in class

f.  Analysis should show comparisons to the texts studied in class and the additional text you found

3. ESSAY and sketches

Write a thorough 5-paragraph essay discussing the attitudes toward America from many different perspectives. Cite evidence from articles read. Include small sketches that document the different perspectives

GUIDELINES:

a.  Must include 5 paragraphs in proper format

b.  Must show at least 3 different perspectives (different attitudes)

a.  One can be from the American perspective

b.  One from the immigrant perspective

c.  One from another source (such as another country…)

c.  Must cite evidence and examples from the texts studied in class

d.  Include small sketches of the different perspectives covered in your essay. Pictures can be embedded in the essay or added at the end.

e.  Sketches can be colored or not, hand-drawn or traced.
