SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service—Alexander 4-H program announces their summer educational programs for youth. Participation is not limited to 4-H members. Call the NC Cooperative Extension Office in Alexander County to register at 828-632-3125. All county day camps except Horsemanship Day Camps begin the day at the NC Cooperative Extension Center - Alexander County. Participants must pay a 50% deposit to reserve their space. No space will be reserved until a deposit has been made. Refund Policy: No refunds unless there is a person on the waiting list.

June Opportunities

ROCKCLIMBING –JUNE 11-12- -- 9:00am-12 noon; Ages 5 - 18. Learn basic rock climbing skills and safety. Climbing will be done indoors at the Statesville Fitness Center. All safety equipment, transportation and a lite snack will be provided. Rock climbing can be strenuous, but participants DO NOT need to be in excellent physical condition, just eager to have fun and learn an exciting new sport. Cost for this camp is $30 or $15 per day.

BEGINNING KNITTING- June 11-13, 10 am-12 Noon. Ages 10 and up, NC Cooperative Extension Center. Come learn knitting with three mornings of knitting instruction. Forbeginning knitters or those with prior experience who want to improve their skills. Participants will knit a project that can be kept or given as a gift. Each participant will beasked to bring a pair of size 8 or 9 knitting needles.FREE!!!! Instructors: Margie Dickey and Adra Kryszczuk.

READING MAKES CENT$ - June 11-13, 1:30 -4:30 pm. Ages 8-14 years old. NC Cooperative Extension Center. Learn about money management skills such as the history of money, managing, earning, spending, saving and sharing money through fun hands on activities and reading. Cost is $20. Instructor: Suzanne N. Rhinehart- Extension 4-H Agent.

SCRAPBOOK THOSE SUMMER MEMORIES- June 14 & 15th; 10 am to 2 pm—Ages 8-up. Cost is $25. This workshop allows you to preserve your memories through photos. Each participant will receive a 12 x12 scrapbook and all the supplies you will need to complete your pages. Participants must bring photos for their scrapbook. Instructor: Nicole Tadt.

FULL-ZOO SNOOZE- June 15 (4 pm) to June 16 (4 pm)-- Cost is $45 : Ages: 7-12 years old. -Come spend the night at the North Carolina Zoo for an overnightadventure which will includes special presentations, activities, a light snack, an outdoor experience and a craft to take home. The fun will resume the next morning, after a light breakfast, until 9 amwhen we continue our adventure on your own in the NC Zoo’s 500-acre park. Our special presentation program will be “Creatures of the Night” which will explore skills and senses of nocturnal animals in this fun and exciting program. Concentrating on bats and owls, we’ll shed some light on the mystery of what’s really going ‘bump in the night’. Youth will develop a greater understanding of our nighttime neighbors, their roles in our environment and how we can help them. Students will have a blast building bat boxes and a hoot dissecting owl pellets. Cost includes transportation, insurance, program fees, and Saturday breakfast and lunch. Participants must furnish Friday supper and money for additional refreshments on site.

Tues. & Thurs. Only-DISCOVERY DAY CAMP- June 18, 19 & 21, 22--Come join youth from Alexander, Catawba and Iredell Counties for 4 days of discovery from 8 am—4 pm. Program is designed for youth ages 5-13 years old. Each day a different county hosts the daily activities with an educational and recreational activity. Monday, June 18th- Catawba County Day: Wildlife programs at River Bend Park with an afternoon fun at Hickory Dickory Dock; Tuesday, June 19th- Iredell County Day: Zootastic Animal Farm followed by bowling in the afternoon; Thursday, June 21st- Alexander County Day: Gem Mining at Hiddenite Emerald Mines and afternoon activities of beginning canoe lessons and other outdoor fun; Friday, June 22nd- Discovery Place/IMAX Movie. Transportation is provided from Extension Center. Cost is $20 per day or $80 for the week. Participants must furnish a lunch and a drink. You may sign up for one or all days of the camp. Limited to 12 campers.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN- June 25-29- 9 am —12 noon-- Ages 7-12; NC Cooperative Extension Center.Cost is $30. Limited to 12 youth.The theme will be ¡QUE RICO! LA CULTURA! which will feature hands-on experiences in which youth learn about the Latino culture, Latino foods, crafts, dance and celebrations! Tentative plans include one field trip last day to a Mexican Restaurant. Instructor: Margo Mosley- Family & Consumer Science Extension Agent.

PENN 4-H CAMP- June 24-29th-- Week long overnight camp designed for youth ages 8-14 years old. This is an American Camping Association Accredited Camp is located near Reidsville, North Carolina. Daily activities include swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, ecology, crafts, and much more. Cost is $350 for Alexander County residents and $390 for surrounding counties. The Trekker fee is $370 which is a special program for 12-14 year olds. A $50 deposit is required by April 1. The price includes all program fees, camp t-shirt, $15 store money, transportation, insurance, and meals while at camp. All campers are required to have had a physical within 24 months of the camp date. We currently have limited spaces.

July Opportunities

4-H CLOVERBUD DAY CAMP- July 2, 3 & 5, 6 -- 9 am- 3 pm. Designed for youth ages 5-9 years old. You may sign up for one or all days of the camp. Daily activities include: Monday, July 2nd--Gem Mining/Fossils & swimming; Tuesday, July 3rd--Indoor Rock Climbing at Statesville Fitness Center and swimming; Thursday, July 5th--Crazy Arts Day- travel to Resource Center in Hickory to create their own piece of artwork & movie; Friday, July 6th--Cloverbud Cuisine- Join 4-H Chef- Faith Wahlers to learn how to cook lots of neat recipes in the kitchen & swimming. Transportation is provided from Extension Center in Taylorsville. Cost is $20 per day or $80 for the week. Participants must furnish a bag lunch and a drink. You may sign up for one or all days of the camp. Limited to 12 campers.

FULL-ANITA-ALTA 4-H DAY CAMP- July 9-13; 8 am —4:00 pm-- This day camp is designed for youth ages 8-14 years old.. The camp will be held at Anita-Alta Youth Camp in Caldwell County. Transportation will be provided from the Alexander County Extension Office each day for campers. Activities include canoeing on a pond, fishing, archery, crafts, hiking, stream ecology, forestry, low ropes course, outdoor cookery and lots more. Cost is $100 for the week. Campers must provide a lunch and drink for each day.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN- July 16-20;9 am —12 noon-- Ages 9-up;Cost is $30. NC Cooperative Extension Center. Limitedto 12 youth. This year’s theme: Let’s GetCreative! We’ll get creative with edible gifts, edible arrangements and more food fun as we take basic cooking skills to the next level. Food safety and nutrition emphasized. Each day includes crafts, games, food preparation and tasting. There will one field trip. Instructor: Margo Mosley- Family & Consumer Science Extension Agent.

Cost is $95 at Sunset Ridge Stables in Bethlehem (Alexander County) for youth of all riding abilities (beginner to advanced). No prior riding experience required.Activities include riding lessons, stable management instruction and crafts. Snack is provided. Camp size is limited to 15 campers per week.

August Opportunities

ANITA ALTA 4-H ADVENTURE CAMP- August 6-8th; Cost $85; Ages 12-19. Come and enjoy 2 nights/3 days of canoeing, fishing, environmental education, outdoor cookery and lots more. Sleeping will be held in cabins and all meals will be prepared on site cooked by campers. Prior camp experience at Anita- Alta 4-H Camp is required.

BEGINNING SEWING-August 9-10th--1:00-4:00 pm. Learn basic sewing skills such as machine threading and machine sewing. No sewing experience and no sewing machine required. This 2 day workshop is designed for youth. Ages 7- up. Limited to 8 youth. This workshop is FREE!!!!. Instructor: Micki Earp.

FUN WITH FABRICS- August 13-17; 9 am—2 pm;Cost is $10. Prior sewing experience required. Sewing machine and sewing notions must be provided by participant. If you wish to use a specific fabric, call the 4-H Office a couple weeks before camp to find out the requirements. All other project materials will be furnished. Limited to 8 youth, ages 8 years and older. Participants must bring a bag lunch and a drink. Location: Extension Learning Center. Instructor: Micki Earp.

MOVIE MAKING 101-August 20-22nd1:30-4:30 pm Extension Learning Center; Ages 13 and older. Cost is $5.00. Come learn a career in multi-media with Chad Ritchie, Alexander County Government - Channel Administrator. Participants will learn the process of creating a movie for the Alexander County Government Channel which will highlight the 2012 Alexander County 4-H and Youth Summer Opportunities Program. Instructor: Chad Ritchie, Alexander County Government - Channel Administrator.

FULL-4-H20 DAY CAMP–August 20-22; 8 am—2 pm-- Ages 9-up. Cost is $30. Learn about a career in aquatic and fisheries biology. Participants will learn about water and related environmental quality areas. You will be getting wet! Sessions will involve advanced water biology and testing skills, electrofishing, advanced macro-invertebrate identification and a daylong canoe trip on river to learn basic canoeing skills. Advanced canoeing skills are not required but the camp involves some strenuous activities. Transportation will be provided from the Extension Office to camp locations. Campers must provide a bag lunch and a drink for each day. Limited to 10 campers. Instructor: Lenny Rogers, Alexander County Extension Director.

4-H20 Camping/Rafting Trip – August 23-24– Ages 11- up. Cost is $100 --Youth will enjoy a guided rafting on the Nantahala River in Swain County followed by an overnight tent camping trip in the Great Smoky National Park and trout fishing at Coopers Fish Farm. We hope to catch trout for supper. Participants should be able to swim but no prior rafting experience is required. Instructor: Lenny Rogers, Alexander County Extension Director.
