THE SOUTHERN GOLDEN RETREIVER SOCIETY

LIMITED OBEDIENCE SHOW

9TH AUGUST 2014 CROWHURST SURREY

Thank you for asking me judge, I really enjoyed my day with such a friendly bunch of doggy people

Thanks to Kevin for stewarding for me today (his first time) -- an excellent job Kevin

INTRODUCTORY CLASS 19 ENTERED 15 WORKED

This is the first time the Society has scheduled this class and they have encouraged members who have never competed in Obedience to have a go

The round was a simple right hand circle with a designated reward area in the ring

The recall was designed so that at the end of the exercise (no finish in this class) the handler just needed to take 2 steps backwards to be in the reward area and praise and reward their dog. Sadly almost no one did this!!

Despite the notes and instructions beforehand many of the handers turned up with neither treats nor toys.

Quite a number of the handlers found it difficult to motivate /play with their dogs even with a toy.

Play is such an important part of the training to encourage the dog that obedience is “FUN”

The standard was very mixed with many of the handlers just not encouraging their dogs.

Goldies are not always the easiest to train anyway .

The majority of handlers were good humoured but extremely tense about working in an Obedience class

Of those entered only 1 broke the stay. Those that completed the stay exercise should be commended

The results were

1st losing 1 ¾ points No97 Dave Toms with “Bobby” Julolian Bobby a nice round only losing for a tight lead on heelwork, having his lead caught on the dog’s leg on the play exercise and a wide crooked sit on the recall. A nice round to judge

2nd losing 2 ¼ points No 10 Mrs C Collie (sorry I didn’t catch your first name) with “ Inca” Glenlomond Vallach the major fault on heelwork was a tight lead several times and an off centre present on recall. Overall a good team who will a little effort could go far

3rd losing 2 ¾ points No 21 “Penny” Qumaara Miss Moneypenny owned by Hazel Evans handled by Debbie Goodall. Checking the dog with the lead on heelwork was your downfall today plus an off centre present and backward sit on recall Minor bits and pieces that can be easily tidied up. Well done

4th losing 3 points No 71 Ian Richardson’s “Jonty” Sarama Summer Song. Most of your marks were lost with a tight lead together with a wide crooked backwards sit in the recall

5th losing 4 points No 20 “Leesi” Qumaara Khaleesi owned by Hazel Evans handled by Mike Evans. Again a tight lead cost you today plus a couple of lags. On recall Leesi did a very slow wide crooked sit

6th losing 4 ¼ points No 64 Hazel Porter’s “ Cassie” Maluraya Lemon Bon Bon A tight lead and a couple of checks on the lead cost you a higher place today. Well done

Others worthy of note

No 3 John Adams with “Zara” a lovely clear recall

No 48 Jenny Kirby with “Hawkins” another clear recall with a really smart present

No 57 Debbie McCleod with “ Hamish” broke his stays otherwise would have been in the cards today

BEGINNERS CLASS 12 ENTERED 10 WORKED THE ROUND

In this class Kennel Club Certificates of Merit were awarded to all dogs losing less than 10 marks overall.

The round was a simple “U” shape with 1 right turn, 2 left turns and 2 about turns

Two dogs broke the sit stay all clear on the down stay (due to the hot weather the down stay was reduced to 1 minute)

The class worked after lunch and many of the dogs found it just too hot to work

1st losing 1 ½ points No 82 Karen Menter’s “ Emmy” Varches Topaz Jewell a lovely round to watch just a couple of lags on HOL, a single wide on HF and just bits and pieces on Recall and Retrieve

Well Done

2nd losing 1 ¾ marks No 58 Karen Menter’s “Saffy” Varches Summertime a very happy bouncy dog lost some marks for jumping HOL and HF and a clear recall

This handler has a nice disposition with her dogs. Keep it up Karen your dogs could do well in Obedience. Please come and see us at Culverstone DTC

3rd losing 4 ¼ marks No 99 Anne Benefield’s Pasha Palharvest Autominal Gold The lady with Pilchard Cake (a wonderful discovery for dogs) . This is a great training aid and the dogs love it

Lovely attention at times on HOL and HF, Anne use your voice more and a bit of “kidology” with the pilchard cake let the dog think you have lots of it in your hand and you will get more consistent attention. Wide about turns and wides cost you today

4th losing 5 ½ No 33 David Jarrett with Gillie Maluraya Mozart Wide about turns and some lags cost you a higher place today. Gillie’s pickup on retrieve was very clean and the best of the day. Well Done

5th losing 6 No 100 Anne Benefield (the pilchard cake lady again) with Summer Coombstock Snow in Summer would have been placed higher if Summer had not spat the dumbell out in front of you

The above dogs were all awarded the Certificate of Merit

6th losing 11 ¾ No 28 Beverley Hewitt with Ted Qumaara Kazanjian the drop and messing about on Retrieve cost you dearly today also Ted had a very wide present and c sit on recall

Well done to you all

Many of the problems (and points lost) are as a result of the handler not getting the dog’s name and command in before turning. In these lower classes extra commands are not penalised you can also use your left hand to encourage your dog on the turns

Back to the Pilchard cake hope that the Hooley gang find it helps their dogs to pay attention on heelwork

Once again thanks to the Committee and all the members for making it such an enjoyable day

Happy Dogging

Mike Moloney
