The Sojourner Truth Scholarship for Social Justice

Two Scholarships of $1000 are awarded each year.

We are proud that residents of this region have a remarkable historical heritage fromthe many individuals who were deeply involved in the abolition of slavery and the support of women’s rights, most especially, Sojourner Truth. It is our goal and our privilege to recognize and encourage young people who carry this heritage forward in their own way.

How Are Scholarship Recipients Recognized?

Scholarship awards are presented at the annual celebration on the Sunday before Memorial Day at the Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue Park in Florence. Recipients are asked to speak briefly at the presentation.

Who Can Apply?

All high school seniors attending a public high school in Hampshire County who have been active in social justice efforts.

How to Apply

Applications may be found in all Hampshire County high school guidance offices; or go directly to to submitan application form that includes space foran 800 – 1200 word essay telling about your social justice project(s) along with pertinent biographical information.

Application Deadline: April 22.

Finalists will be asked to meet briefly with some members of our committee in late April. Recipients are expected to attend the commemoration event on Sunday May 29, 2 p.m. at the Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue in Florence.

Instructions:

Please submit an essay (800 – 1200 words) describing your experience working for social justice in your school or your community. You may use the space provided on line or submit a separate document that includes your contact information via e-mail or US Mail (see details below).

Guidelines:

  • Describe your social justice project(s)
  • Explain what motivated you to choose the particular project, what the project involved, how you felt about it and how your work relates to the life and works of Sojourner Truth.
  • Give some examples of how it addresses the broad goals of social justice (such as reducing economic inequality, improving human rights, promoting diversity, or working to end violence, racism and discrimination).
  • Tell us about any plans to continue your social justice work after high school.
  • Briefly share any other biographical information that pertains to your work for social justice.
