Welcome to the 2009-2010

RMS Science Olympiad Team

State Finalist in 2007, 2008, 2009

Last year, the RMS Science Olympiad Team, again earned recognition as one of the very best teams in the State by taking 4th Place at the State Science Olympiad. The National Science Olympiad is a Non-Profit organization dedicated to bringing science alive for all participating students. Science Olympiad events emphasize the problem solving aspects of science, engineering, and mathematics. In addition,Science Olympiad events stress the development of teamwork and cooperative learning strategies. Nationally, the Science Olympiad has been around a long time, but it also has competitive events at the local, regional, and state levels.

In order to do well in Science Olympiad, students need to be strong self-starters and highly self-motivatedto excel. Therefore, I am asking that only those students, who are serious about competing at a high level, enrollinScience Olympiad. Strong parental support is also needed and required. Generally, the RMS Science Olympiad Team meets daily after school for tutoring and model building. There may be additionaltutoring sessions scheduled by event tutors.

Some of you might know that the School-wide Science Olympiadis modeled on the National Science Olympiadformat and is scheduled, in part, to introduce the Science Olympiad to the students of RMS. However, the RMS Science Olympiad TEAM is a traveling COMPETITIVE TEAMthat competes against other schools in Texas. In order to understand what the Science Olympiad is all about I highly recommend that you and your student check out the following websites (B-Division Events are middle school events):

If you and your student are interested in joining the RMS Science Olympiad Team, next year, and would like to keep up-to-date on current RMS team activities, please fill out and return the attached Student Information Sheet and be sure to include email addresses. Because space is limited, please, let me know as soon as possible if your student would like to attend this exciting program and be a part of one of the very best teams in Texas and to reach the next level--Nationals.

Thanks,

Joe Watson
