River Clyde

Scotland

30thJune / 1st July 2015

Dear Angler/Representative

Welcome to this the6th Police Sport UK Services & Community River Fly Fishing Championships, the event will again be held on the River Clyde on the water stretching four & half miles either side of Abington in the Clyde Valley. The event has been arranged for Tuesday 30thJune and Wednesday 1st July 2015.

The photograph above shows the Falls of the Clyde in spate with a little more water than I would hope to see at the end of June. The Falls are situated near New Lanark which is North of where we will be fishing, but worth a visit. A hurdle just too high for Atlantic salmon to jump, though the picture is a little deceptive. The Falls of the Clyde is the collective name of four linn (Scots for Waterfalls) on the River Clyde, the falls consist of the Upper falls of Bonnington Linn, Corra Linn, Dundaff Linn and the lower falls of Stonebyre Linn. Corra Linn is the highest at 84feet and the most famous with Sir Walter Scott and Wordsworth writing about it and the painter William Turner capturing it on canvas during his travels of Scotland.

Anyway our competition remains a fully catch and release event, a rule introduced to our river competitions right from the start. The competition consist of teams of four anglers, once all the names of the competitors are with me I will circulate the draw, rules, maps and other information required for a successful competition. Cards will be provided on the day.

I have managed to negotiate the same deal with the hotel as last year, so you won’t find the cost stretching your pocket to much, however nothing ever stays the same and some of our costs have risen ever so slightly. As in previous years all Police Sport UK members get free entry into this match and their competition fishing costs paid, Iwill also make a small contribution towards the presentation dinner on the third night.

No packed lunch is provided for competitors on either of the competition days. Though I’ll put my negotiating hat on to ensure you all get your free soft drink or shandy at the Abington Hotel at conclusion of the event. I look forward to meeting you all on the Monday night for a coffee, or light beverage before enjoying 2 days fishing.

This year’s entry form/package for three nights, 2 days fishing is £175.00 per angler. Please complete and return with your nominated competitors, officials and guests by the 21stMay 2015in order that I can make the necessary entries/amendments to the program.

All cheques to be made payable to:- “Police Sport UK Fly Fishing Section” and forwarded with entry forms to

I am now looking for a 50% payment from each team, towards their participation in the event. This will allow me the opportunity to place deposits, order programmes, medals etc. without incurring too much cost on my own funds.I will send a letter / receipt on arrival of your cheque. The balance remaining to be settled on the arrival of anglers at the hotel on Monday night.

The Abington Hotel inAbington is just off the A74 is just 5 minutes from the River, though anglers may use their vehicle to get to different parts of the river, during the competition..

In 2014 the Scottish Police team won the event, so I am in possession of the Cup, however the wooden fish is held by England. Malcolm can you please bring it with you. Adhering to the Police Sport UK policy of have greater integration with the community, there will be a new trophy this year the Community Shield, but I am still working out how this award will be presented rather than just going to a team of invited anglers from the community

I have ordered medals for the winners/runners up, as detailed below

4 / Gold / THE RIVER FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 WINNING TEAM
4 / Silver / THE RIVER FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
TEAM RUNNER UP
1 / Gold / THE RIVER FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015BIGGEST BROWN TROUT
1 / Gold / THE RIVER FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 BIGGEST GRAYLING

You will note on the Entry Form I have left space for Guests/Officials, not that I want to go down the line of having a number of officials out checking flies and generally interfering with the anglers as they fish. However I am keen to encourage as many new anglers to this event, so please look at your sections and invite a reserve /an official or both. It will also help to fill the hotel, the reduction in the cost package of the package was convincing the hotel there that our number would be nearly 30anglers.

Rules and map of river beats to follow:

Yours in fishing.
