Network Monitoring Tools and Techniques
The Microsoft® Network Monitoring Tools and Techniques Workshop is designed for the IT organization that wants to optimize its usage of Microsoft’s Network Monitor. The information in the workshop is a collection of best practices that have been compiled from both the Microsoft Windows® Product Group and Microsoft Services Premier Support. / Overview
Increasing and maintaining network uptime is a key goal for all enterprise organizations. To help companies improve this metric, it is important to put tools in place that will help IT staff quickly and accurately identify problems with the underlying network or applications so that a resolution can be reached in the most efficient manner possible.
The MicrosoftNetwork Monitoring Tools and Techniques Workshop addresses this important topic.
The Network Monitoring Tools and Techniques Workshop provides participants with the skills required to use the Microsoft Network Monitor utility. This utility troubleshoots peer protocols in order to isolate underlying network or application problems.
Workshop participants will be introduced to the Network Monitor protocol analyzer and will get a thorough overview of topics such as the installation of Network Monitor, network-specific performance monitor counters, triggering an action based on specific network events, capturing network traffic, and the analysis of network traffic.
To help ensure the high-quality knowledge transfer expected by the subject-matter experts who attend this one-day workshop, attendance is limited to a maximum of 16 participants. All participants must meet the prerequisites as outlined in the following “Target Audience” section. The workshop is delivered at the location of your choice, complete with lecture and labs. / Target Audience
This workshop is designed to introduce IT professionals to network protocol analysis and the Microsoft Network Monitor sniffer tool. Topics coveredincludethe installation and optimal configuration of Network Monitor for data capturing, as well asbasic capture analysis. The TCP and SMB protocols will be discussed in depth as teaching aids. Participants will gain more from the workshop if they already have a generalunderstanding of the following concepts:
  • Ethernet CSMA/CD topology
  • The OSI networking model.
  • IP addressing, subnetting and routing
  • RFC standards documents, in particular with respect to network protocols.
Key Benefits
This workshop provides participants with
the skills and techniques that will help enable them to implement processes
and use tools to help realize the following
in their production environment:
  • Help reduce mean time to failure by
    using the integrated Performance
    Monitor counters and statistics for
    base-lining and capacity planning
  • Help reduce mean time to resolution
by enabling IT staff to provide
Microsoft Services Premier Support personnel with a network trace
  • Help reduce mean time to restoration
by using best practices such as maintaining a repository server
  • Help reduce recurring outages by
    quickly identifying unique problems
