Master Program in Tropical Agriculture

Scope of Curriculum

  1. The curriculum covers all fields related to tropical agriculture, including agronomy, horticulture, plant protection, rural planning, veterinary medicine, animal science, forestry, wood industry, aquaculture, food science, agribusiness management and water and soil conservation, etc. In addition to the required courses (14 credits, including 6 credits for thesis), the selective courses (16 credits)are tailor-made according to the requests from the supervisor(s) of a student.
  2. Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits and a minimum TOEFL ITP score 530 or equivalent English-proficiency verifications (except for foreign students from English speaking countries) before the master’s thesis oral exam.
  3. After completion of all the requirements for courses, English proficiency and thesis, the students will receive the “Master of Science” degree from the Department of Tropical Agriculture and International Cooperation, International College.

Qualification

  1. Completion of a bachelor degree in agriculture or related fields in public or registered private universities and independent colleges, or foreign universities and colleges approved by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan (ROC).
  2. Applicants from countries where English is not the native language are required to take the TOEFL or equivalent English-proficiency verifications.

*Applicants must be done verification by the Taiwan (ROC) Embassy/ Consulate General /Representative Office in the country of the issuing school before enrollment.

  1. TaiwanICDF Medical Report (including the HIV test) issued within the past three months
  2. Three Letters of recommendation.Please indicate the affiliations of those who make the recommendations
  3. One study/research planwritten in English which includes, but is not limited to, the following:

a)Title- Delineating the research area to be conducted.

b)Introduction- Stating the results of literature reviews as well as stating student's background, personal interest, strengths and weaknesses, if any.

c)Objective- Stating specifically the purpose of this research.

d)Action plans- Specifying the supportive research activities to be carried out to accomplish the objective as specified above.

e)Anticipated results- Stating the results that can be anticipated in conducting the action plans listed above.

Admission

Source of Funding for the Scholarship Program

The scholarship program designed for the master students is for the period from September 2016 through July 2018, funded by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF).

Program Duration

It is a policy that the duration for the master program is from September 2016 to July 2018. Students, who have successfully completed and passed all courses and oral exam for thesis, and minimum TOEFL ITP score 530 or equivalent English-proficiency verifications within the stipulated time period, shall receive the “Master of Science” degree from the Department of Tropical Agriculture and International Cooperation, International College by NPUST.

Notification of Admission and Registration

(1)After being reviewed and selected by the Foreign Student Application Evaluation Committee, names of the candidates will be recommended to the President of NPUST for final approval.

(2)After being notified of admission, students must complete registration procedures within the specified time. Late registration will not be accepted.

(3)If information found to be untrue or falsified, said student shall be denied of admission.

(4)After registration, students must provide an original diploma and official transcript.English translation must accompany the original diploma, should it not be written in English.A copy of highest diploma and transcript verified with official stamps by the Taiwan (ROC) Embassy in the country of the issuing school must be submitted as students register in NPUST.

Scope of Scholarship

Entitlements: The total scholarship, including airfare (a one-way ticket each for the 1st year before the registration and the 2ndyear after the completion of the master program), housing, tuition, insurance, book costs and a monthly allowance will be provided to each student. The scholarship is itemized as follows:

(1)Airfare- TaiwanICDF shall provide economy class tickets on the most direct flights to Taiwan (before the registration for the first semester) and leave Taiwan (after the completion of the master degree).

(2)Housing- All students must reside in the student dormitory provided by the NPUST.

(3)Tuition fee- Tuition fee will be paid for by the scholarship as required by the NPUST.

(4)Insurance- While in Taiwan, in addition to the mandatory student safety insurance as set by the Ministry of Education, each student shall be insured for medical coverage of accident and necessary health care insurance (chronic illness is not including). The insurance fees will be paid for by the scholarship.

(5)Book costs- Purchasing textbooks as required by instructors shall be subject to the approval of the Director of the DTAIC.

(6)Allowance- Each student shall receive NT$15,000 per month as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account.

Notices

(1)M.S. Program students shall not take more than 15 credits per semester.

(2)M.S. program students must complete a minimum of 24 credits in courses and 6 credits in thesis, which are calculated separately.

(3)Graduate students under M.S. program are graded on a scale of 100 being the highest and 70 being the passing grade. Required courses, if failed, must be repeated. A student, who fails academically, judging from the averaged score for all the courses taken in a school year, shall be dismissed.

(4)Student’s ethic is graded on a scale of 100 being the highest and 70 being the passing grade. Anyone receives less than 70 shall be dismissed.

(5)If scholarship holders:

a)Fail the academic average in any one semester, which is 70 out of 100 for postgraduates; in which case, full scholarship will be suspended during the following semester. Should the academic average be achieved during this next semester, the TaiwanICDF will continue the scholarship by request; or

b)Fail more than 1/2 of all modules that they elect to study, across two consecutive semesters; or more than 2/3 of all modules that they elect to study, in any one semester. In this case, the full scholarship will be terminated.

c)Have their scholarship suspended or terminated, the student status will depend upon the regulation set by the university.

(6)Students who are under the scholarship program requesting a temporary leave of absence from the university on a personal basis shall be terminated their rights to the scholarship.

(7)For any reason a M.S. student cannot attend classes or participate in other required activities, authorized leave of absence must be requested according to the university regulations.

(8)Four graduate students of the same sex will be assigned to live in the same dormitory room. Observation of dormitory rules is a must.

(9)Students are required to work as student helps at the office of DTAIC. The nature and the number of hours of the work should be determined by the Director of DTAIC.

Others

In the event of the issues or matters not mentioned in the preceding articles, relevant rules and regulations of the present program as well as those of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan and the NPUST shall apply.
