Introduction of Kuricorder & Friends

"Kuricorder & Friends" is a project by a group of Japanese musicians, namely the Kuricorder Quartet, Toshiaki Chiku and The Beautiful Hummingbird.

The Kuricorder Quartet, established in 1994, is a music group whose work has been heard by most Japanese children through "Pythagoraswitch", a well-known children’s program broadcast by NHK Educational TV. Using a variety of instruments, such as recorders, melodions, percussion and ukuleles, they have established an intimate and distinctive sound. Their original compositions as well as arrangements which range from Western classics to traditional and rock music and to which they add their own humorous and heart-warming flavor attract not only audiencesirrespective of generations but also artists wishing to collaborate with. As a result, they have presented music for a large number of sound track, TV programs and commercials, and more than 100 CDs have been published. They are always busy performers who perform over 100 concerts per year.

Toshiaki Chiku is a singer and song writer who established "Tama", smash-hit band in Japan in 1990s. After their breakup in 2003, Chiku has had an active solo performance career.

The Beautiful Hummingbird is the duet of Mitsuko Koike and Nobuaki Tabata. Established in 2002, they have produced their songs and music together. The combination of Mitsuko's free and open voice and Nobuaki's firm but warm guitar sound creates their own musical space.

From 2015, The Kuricorder Quartet and these three musicians have started a three-year project named "Kuricorder & Friends: Asia 6-Nation Music & Art Collaboration Project", supported by the Asia Center, Japan Foundation in Tokyo.
