BREEDING OPERATION SOP

BREEDING OPERATION MANAGER: Joe Farmer

Version 1.0, Nov. 10, 2004

SOW/GILT FEEDING

  • Feed sows/gilts in breeding crates one scoop daily
  • Feed sows/gilts in pens daily 2 sows per bucket. Use smaller bucket May-Oct, use larger bucket Nov-April
  • Be sure to scatter feed as much as possible, this will help all sows to get their share of feed
  • While feeding sows/gilts look for sows not eating. Check them to see if they are sick or lame. Turn their breeding card and make a note on card to give them 10 cc of lincomix 300 for lameness or 10 cc penicillin for sickness. Give them this daily for 3 days.
  • All sharps (needles, scalpels) should be put in Animal Sharps container.
  • Thin or abused sows should be noted and moved to breeding crates
  • Be careful not to spill feed in aisle, clean up daily any feed spilled inside or outside building.
  • Check feed tanks for feed level in tank after feeding each day Monday -Thursday only. Report these levels to person in charge of feed orders.
  • Feed tanks should be allowed to get empty every 4-5 weeks in May-Sept and every 6-8 weeks in Oct-April. When they are empty clean them out from bottom of feed tank. This will help keep feed from getting old or spoiled.

BREEDING SOWS

  • Check open gilts for standing heat with a boar. Move gilts in heat to a breeding crate
  • Breed sows/gilts daily. Breed only sows/gilts in standing heat (body rigid, ears erect or slightly moving). Breed them 2 times, once each day. Mark each sow bred. Tag gilts when they are bred.
  • Insert insemination tubes into sow gently and slowly. Use AI gel on end of insemination tubes when breeding gilts.
  • Keep boar in front of sows/gilts while breeding
  • Use body and hand contact with sow while breeding to help semen intake
  • Breed sows in early morning. The earlier the better in June-September.
  • Be sanitary! Don’t let tubes touch any surface. Wipe each sows vulva with a clean paper towel
  • Look for sows with a discharge while breeding. Note these sows and give 10 cc Penicillin per day for 2 days.
  • After breeding sows/gilts in crates, walk a boar through the pens of 2 groups of sows that are possibly recycling. Example: if you’re breeding group 5, check groups 2 and 3. Any recycles should be moved to breeding crate and bred.
  • While walking the boar turn on flush water to old boar pens. Turn off after walking boar.
  • 50 open gilts should be ordered each month
  • Open gilts should be vaccinated with flu and PLE on the week that they are delivered and 2 weeks later. They should be wormed 2 weeks after delivery.
  • On Wednesday each week, vaccinate for E. coli 2 groups of sows/gilts – one group ready to farrow in two weeks and one group ready to farrow in four weeks.

CLEANING

  • Gestation aisle should be cleaned daily.
  • Breeding aisles should be cleaned Tuesday and Friday
  • Office should be cleaned once per week on Tuesday or Wednesday
  • Open gilt pens should be cleaned between each new group delivered.
  • Daily pick up anything inside or outside the building that is trash.
  • On Friday all sows weaned that week should be sprayed with Prolate. Wear respirator, gloves, and face shield while spraying.

  • Electrical outlets, switches and boxes should be swept off once per week on Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • Leaking nipple waterers need to be replaced immediately.
  • When temperatures are above 80 degrees all fans and misters should be working. Check daily. If any are not working they must to be fixed same day.
  • Feed tanks and curtain controls should be greased on 1st day of each month.
  • Put out rat/mice bait whenever they are seen.
  • Insecticide should be sprayed weekly on aisles, tops of block walls, and office on Tuesday or Wednesday.
