The James A. McCavitt and Annie LePorsMcCavitt
Scholarship Fund
Administered by Silicon Valley Community Foundation
Application Packet for 2018-2019 School Year
Background
The James A. McCavitt and Annie LePorsMcCavitt Scholarship Fund was established by James Donald McCavitt of Palo Alto, California, in honor of his parents. One scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually.
Mr. and Mrs. McCavitt each had the equivalent of a sixth grade education; however, they valued this instruction because they learned to cipher, read and write. James was taken out of school at the age of twelve to labor in the Broad Top coal mines. Annie completed the “Sixth Reader” and then was hired out as a domestic in the Dudley-Saxton area. After their marriage in 1909, they set up an academic milieu in their Defiance home so all eight children could complete high school and go on to college.
The McCavitt’s oldest daughter was admitted to a nursing program but was unable to attend owing to an illness in the family. The other seven children hold a combination of 12 college and university degrees from ShippensburgStateUniversity, PennState, Rutgers, Georgetown, the University of Pennsylvania and San JoseStateUniversity. Mr. and Mrs. McCavitt’s 28 grandchildren also hold 25 various degrees.
Beyond their fields of study, members of the James McCavitt family of Defiance have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, written books, conferred with heads of state, been elected presidents of national associations, been caregivers for the elderly, invented scientific equipment, published reports, produced plays, appeared on national television, become entrepreneurs, served on boards of charitable organizations, collected works of art and traveled extensively throughout the world.
The desire to be life-long learners was instilled in the McCavitt children by their parents. Avenues of opportunity opened up to them which were not available to many large families during the “Depression Years.”
In setting up this scholarship in honor of James A. McCavitt and Annie LePorsMcCavitt, their son hopes that they will be remembered throughout the TusseyMountainSchool District and the Broad Top area as model parents who would want others to profit by their humble words: “Get an education and make something of yourselves.”
