Study Abroad Guidelines for Sponsored Courses for 2014-2015Academic Year:
1) Instructors and Overall Guidelines
*The course instructor must be a full-time UM-Flint faculty member (Lecturer, Tenure Track, or Clinical). The UM-Flint instructor is the faculty member for the course.
*The faculty member needs to have language fluency (reading and speaking) in the language of host country. If not, the proposal should outline what steps the faculty member(s) will take to ensure that language barriers are appropriately handled.
*It is preferred that the faculty member have prior experience living or studying
in the host country; or its their focus of research.
* The area of study for the course must be the same as or highly similar to the instructor's teaching area at UM-Flint. This will be given great scrutiny by the IGS Study Abroad Committee.
* All safety policies for the University of Michigan-Flint must be followed. Courses must be aligned with the UM Travel Policy which restricts courses traveling to a country under a UM Travel Restriction. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Education Abroad Office or the International Travel Advisory Committee () for further details.

2) Signatures for a Proposal
The course proposal must have the approval from the Department and the
appropriate Dean’s Office, before IGS will sponsor the course. Please fill out the appropriate trip registration form (attached to the email).
3) Budgets and Finances
* The course program budget needs to cover all expenses (including insurances, faculty travel and housing; and estimated airfare costs). Please provide two samples of estimated airfare costs, either from online travel sources or travel agencies.
* All enrollees will pay the full tuition rate for the number of credit hours for that course. This is true for all enrollees – credit or noncredit.
* Budget planning is vital.Budgets are managed by the instructor. Budget overruns will need to be paid by the faculty member's departmental or Unit funds. Please see document on IGs Study Abroad Policy (attached to email).
* All travelers with a course need to have HTH insurance, and submit all liability and medical waiver forms to the Education Abroad Office.

* Additional guidelines related to health, safety, crisis management, liability, etc. will be made available to faculty once courses have been approved.

4) Courses
*While IGS tries to support all courses, we encourage new destinations, new faculty, and new course topics.

* Maximum course length is 3 weeks. This is based on face-to-face contact hours.: pre-country visit, the actual field experience, and post-trip return contact hours. A course cannot have a credit hour variable (1, 2 or 3 credit options).
* A clearly written and comprehensive syllabus that covers course content needs to be submitted with the proposal.
* A detailed, tentative itinerary needs to be submitted (departure and return dates, daily listing of class activities, housing plans, transportation plans, and, where applicable, an explanation of how host country institutions serve as facilitators or
as affiliates).
* Courses need to begin after the start of a Spring or Summer
term and end prior to the final exam dates of that same term. Other courses, that go in the middle of a semester or Spring Break 2015, if requesting IGS – endorsement, should preferably also submit their proposals by the deadline listed.
* A course that does not qualify for sponsorship may qualify as an "endorsed" one. The instructor needs to submit all appropriate paperwork for an endorsed course. Scholarships for endorsed courses will be significantly less than for a sponsored course.

* Beginning next year, and depending on our budget, IGs shall set aside funds to help courses “succeed.” This may be in the form of providing additional scholarships (for students who do not qualify) or helping out faculty stipends, or other issues that may emerge. This will be decided by the IGS Study Abroad Committee.

*If you have any questions about logistics or need help of any kind, please contact the Education Study Abroad Office.
An electronic copy of the proposal, with appropriate signatures, should
be submitted by 9:00 am, May 1, 2014 . One hard copy should also be submitted (on the same day) to Ananth Aiyer, Director of International and Global Studies Program, Department of Sociology/Anthropology/Criminal Justice, 526 French Hall.
