Print Media
The impact of the printing press cannot be overstated. Johannes Gutenberg’s introduction of this technology is widely regarded to have ushered in the modern era of human history by revolutionizing the way we communicate. The changes brought about thanks to mass-production of printed materials drastically changed how people disseminated and took in information, not only across space but also across time. Today, however, electronic reading devices have begun tooffer digital versions ofwriting that once took physical form. Is it only access towriting itself that matters? Or is there something meaningful about a physical publication in the form of a book, periodical, or newspaper? Given the increasing number of publications that are adding digital options, it is worthwhile to explore the meaning of this change in how we consume information.
Read and carefully consider these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking about the future of print media.
Perspective One - In the digital age, print media such as newspapers and books will continue to dwindle in popularity, eventually dying out altogether and becoming a relic of the past.
Perspective Two - Like vinyl record enthusiasts who prefer the way that the analog format sounds, some people prefer to read materials in hard copy. There will always be a place for physical publications, no matter how popular or prevalent digital reading devices become.
Perspective Three - Electronic reading devices, such as the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad, are amazing innovations that have irrevocably changed the landscape of the publishing industry. However, both printed and digital media will remain relevant and valuable far into the future.
