THEWEIGHTOFTHENATIONisapresentationofHBOandtheInstituteofMedicine(IOM),inassociationwiththeCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC)andtheNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH),andinpartnershipwiththeMichaelandSusanDellFoundationandKaiserPermanente. AllthreefilmsinTHEWEIGHTOFTHENATIONFORKIDSwillairduringback-to-schoolseasonthisfall.
Intheircampaigntochangeschoollunchmenus,theRethinkerssurveyedstudentsatschoolsintheircommunityandissuedannualreportcardstoattractmediacoverageandcapturetheattentionofdecision-makers.TheRethinkersmetwithschoolofficialsandcorporateexecutivesfromAramark,oneofthenation’slargestfoodserviceproviders,togetthemthinkingaboutthequalityofschoolmealsandhowtheycouldbeimproved.
Usingthereportcardsandsurveyresults,thekidsnegotiatedwithAramarktoprovidehealthierfoodchoices.Whenageneralagreementtoprovidemorelocal,healthyfooddidnotresultinchange,thekidsheldtheschoolofficials’andthecompany’sfeettothefireandfinallyarrivedataspecificagreementtoservefresh,locallyproducedfoodatleasttwotimesaweek.
