Information
Virus checking software can adversely affecting performance and sometimes even causing errors in a number of software applications including Microsoft® WindowsSoftware. Virus checking software can also mistakenly identify our GeeDee files as a virus. Virus checking software can also slow software performance in certain situations. We recommend that virus checking software be configured in such a way as to minimize the effects of virus scanner interference.
Some virus checking software systems have the ability to virus scan continuously in the background any files that are accessed. This type of configuration can slow down the performance of software, particularly in a network environment.
Significant improvements in performance can be achieved by disabling continuous virus scanning to our GeeDee folder.
For optimum performance, pleased excludeall\\Program Files\GeeDee folders from Real-time/Continuous/Background virus scanning software. Whenever required, these directories can be virus checked in your scheduled manual full disk scans.
Exclusion Locations:G:\Program Files\
C:\GDReports\
C:\GDArchive\
* Do not forget the Server root folder location!
E.G. X:\GDData\Program Files\
Note: If virus scanning software is installed and managed from the server, any changes to virus scanning configuration may need to be made at the server as well as all the workstations. Please consult the documentation that came with your virus scanning software for more information for verification.
The GeeDee Software has it’s own in-built Detection System. File comparisons are based on file size, version and a through CRC32 calculation of each maintained GeeDee file. CRC32 calculations will pick up any corruption or changes in your
GeeDee Program Files folder only.
Symptoms
Auto-scanning the GeeDee folder files/directories while they are in use by the application may result in the following problems: - Workstations lock up frequently;
- Application performance degradation of up to 50% (slow application response time);
- Data corruption.
The above potential problems only occur if GeeDee files are being actively scanned while the GeeDee software is in use. There is no harm in scanning all GeeDee files or directories when they are not in use by the application.

Situation - Example
Norton Antivirus correctly detects certain behaviours as virus-like activity, but sometimes these behaviours are a normal part of the GeeDee program's operation. Your computer might also run slowly when accessing network drives with Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect enabled or the manual scan might take a long time when scanning a network drive. You want to know how to exclude specific network drives, hard drives, folders, and files from being scanned.
Solution - Example
Norton Antivirus uses an Exclusion list to manage exceptions for normal program operations that are detected as virus-like activities. The Exclusion list can also be used to stop Norton Antivirus from scanning a network drive when that scan may cause a decrease in computer performance. Items in the Exclusion list are configured to ignore certain behaviours that would normally be considered virus-like activities.
Norton AV Exclude Weblink Instructions:
McAfee VirusScan - Example
Use the following procedure for configuring McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Version 7.0 to exclude the GeeDee program directory from continuous virus scanning:
- Open the On-Access Scan Properties dialog box, then select one of the following icons in the left-hand pane:
- Default Processes
- Low-Risk Processes
- High-Risk Processes
- On the Detection tab, click Exclusions in the What Not to Scan area. This will open the Set Exclusions dialog box.
- The Set Exclusions dialog box lets you add or edit files, folders, or drives. Windows File Protection is listed by default.
- To add an item to the list of exclusions, open the Add Exclusion Items dialog box by clicking Add.
- To edit an item in the list, you can double-click it or select it and then click Edit.
McAfee AV Exclude Instructions: Go to the Properties - Exclude. Add the suggested GeeDee folder to the exclude list.
*NOTE – The retail/OEM versions of McAfee Version 8.x, 9.x and beyond are no longer supported with the GeeDee system as the ability to exclude our system folder from real-time scans has now been removed.
McAfee’s stance on the issue is “We are now only directing our products to home users, who would not know how to exclude folders…”. 04/09/2005
Spphos VirusScan – Example Anti-Virus SBE: reduced performance with some applications after installation
With Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition (SBE) you might notice a reduction in performance when running some applications alongside Sophos Anti-Virus. You can solve this by excluding particular files and folders from on-access scanning.
What to do
You can find instructions on how to exclude items from on-access scanning in the following documentation
- Windows 2000/XP/2003 - Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition user manual(See pages 23, 31-33).
- Windows 98/Me - InterCheck for Windows 95/98/Me advanced user guide.
Exclude the files and folders mentioned below to resolve this issue for the listed operating systems and software.
Note: You must use the wildcard character '?' to substitute for other parts of the file or folder name.To exclude a printer, type 'LPT1' in the list of exclusions.
