Why Use Technology?
Studies show that technology in the classroom is a powerful tool for learning and comprehension. In our classroom, we would like to expose the students to meaningful experiences with technology. This will help to motivate students and allow them to learn and share their understanding in fun and unique ways. Throughout the year, we will be using technology to kick-start and support our learning in various areas including math, reading and writing. / We are excited to begin using www.Raz-Kids.com. Raz-Kids is an online guided reading program where students can take control of their learning by listening to and reading books at their level. Students can record themselves reading using a microphone and then, send this recording to the teacher’s inbox. For every book read, students earn points and are able to use these points to build their own robots. Please see the accompanying page on Raz-Kids for login instructions.
iPads
Our class has the privilege of having an iPad to support our learning. Students can use the iPad during Learning Centre time to explore a variety of apps that encourage literacy, numeracy, higher-level thinking and problem solving skills.
We also use our iPad to take pictures of our learning inside and outside of the classroom!
IXL Math – In Class Account
www.ixl.com
In addition to our online reading program, we will begin to use our online math program to support and build our math skills. IXL offers math practise questions at the kindergarten level. Students complete practise questions and earn medals, as well as build confidence as young mathematicians. At home, you can utilize the free trial which will allow 20 questions per day.

Tips on how to use technology effectively with your child:
· Introduce one or two activities/apps per week
· Play and talk with your child as he/she plays the games (e.g., let your child ask questions, answer your questions)
· Make sure your child finishes one activity before moving on to another
· Begin at your child’s level (e.g., begin by teaching your child the letters in his/her name)
· Set a time limit on your child’s access to technology
Remember, technology does not teach children, the interactions they have while engaging in activities is what promotes learning.
