THE FUNERAL MASS PEW SHEET LEAFLET
This template, for the imagined John or Jill Doe, is meant to help a family to prepare a pew sheet leaflet to help the congregation in our diverse society to follow the funeral Mass.
Used in conjunction with the template of the ceremony the ceremony can planned in a personal way within the tradition of the Funeral Mass
Another resource is the Book of Scripture Readings, Psalms and sample intentions for the Prayers of the Faithful that is in this website
Music and Hymn resources vary around communities and parishes.When choosing hymns it is good to seek ones that are known ecumenically e.g Amazing Grace, The Lord’s My Shepherd.
There are also two resource sheets for preparing the Mass;
-one that details the participation by family and friends in the Mass,
-another that gives details of the person and their family which names those taking part in the ceremony; and important information sheet for the priest
-
This template has been prepared in Word so that it can be adapted to programmes (like Publisher) on your computer easily.

Notes

  1. Some choose to put a photograph of the decease on the Cover.
  2. Sometimes the Rite of Committal is done at the end of Mass and it is joined to the Final Commendation especially when there is to be a Rite of Committal later; refer to The Order of Christian Funerals page 123ff - Rite of Committal with Final Commendation. Nothing more is required in the Pew Sheet when this is the case)
  3. It is important that we realise that everything that people want in funeral rites can be include BUT everything has it rightful place. Some music is best played at the wake! Again data projection is probably best at the wake or at a Vigil the night before the funeral.
  4. The eulogy is meant to be balanced within the ritual and ought not be too long. It is not meant to give the whole history of a person but to emphasise the things that were inspiring. The actual Greek word ’eulogy’ means ‘to speak well of” literally ‘good words’.
