FORM 6

TEETH WHITENING COMPANIES

Any Tooth Whitening Companies exhibiting at the show must read the following information and complete and return the form referring to Teeth Whitening within the Health & Safety section of this manual and complete and return the agreement to abide by the regulations. Form 2b must also be completed and returned together with Risk Assessments, Insurance Certificates and any other relevant H&S paperwork to the Organisers.

The following information relates to tooth whitening companies exhibiting at all UK venues.

·  The application of tooth whitening products amounts to 'dentistry' (as confirmed in a recent high court case) and therefore must be carried out by a dentist or dental therapist who is registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)..

·  Self-administered tooth whitening products may be sold at exhibitions by people who are not registered dentists, but only if they contain less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. They are for use off the premises and the vendor must not provide any treatment, advice or attendance on their use (describing the product to the customer, or reading the instructions to them is acceptable). This applies both to products sold to the general public and trade visitors.

·  Products with more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide cannot be used on anyone under 18 years of age and can only be sold to dental practitioners.

·  Anyone giving advice on the use of these products must be GDC registered and be a dentist, dental hygienist, dental therapist or clinical dental technician.

·  It makes no difference whether the whitening product contains any hydrogen peroxide, or is simply sodium bicarbonate; the act of giving 'advice and attendance' is only legal if given by one of the registered people above.

Where Treatment is provided - If treatment is being provided by a registered practitioner (see above), then a dentist must be present on the stand. The following process applies......

·  An appropriate clinical examination is to be carried out to ensure that there are no Risk Factors or any other Oral Pathology concerns;

·  Exposure to these products should be limited to ensure that the products are only used as intended in terms of frequency and duration of application;

·  The products should not be made directly available to the consumer, only through a dentist, dental hygienist, dental therapist or a clinical dental technician;

·  Waste must be disposed of in a manner approved for clinical waste

The GDC welcomes queries and exhibitors can email . and The GDC website has FAQ's that are useful: http://www.gdcuk.org/Membersofpublic/Illegalpractice/Pages/FAQs.aspx#.
