The Flint River originates in southern FultonCounty as groundwater, which runs underneath Atlanta's Hartsfield-JacksonAirport. As more creeks join the flow, the river widens and flows southward through the Piedmont and western part of the Coastal Plain area of Georgia. It empties, along with the Chattahoochee River, into LakeSeminole just across the Georgia/Florida border. From LakeSeminole, the ApalachicolaRiver flows southward into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Altamaha River orginates at the confluence of the Ocmulgee River and Oconee River, at the three way county boundary between Montgomery, Jeff Davis, and Wheeler Counties. The Altamaha then flows eastward, and a little southward, for 137 miles to empty into the Atlantic Ocean near Darien, Georgia. Its largest tributary is the Ohoopee River, which joins the Altamaha on the southern border of TattnallCounty. The AltamahaRiver watershed forms the largest freshwater river system east of the Mississippi River. The AltamahaRiver is Georgia's largest (though not longest) river.
The OcmulgeeRiver originates at the confluence of the South River, Yellow River, and Alcovy River at Lake Jackson along the Butts/Jasper County border. From Lake Jackson the OcmulgeeRiver flows southward, then eastward, for approximately 255 miles. Along the Montgomery/Jeff Davis/Wheeler County border, the OcmulgeeRiver merges with the Oconee River to form Georgia's largest river - the Altamaha River - which flows eastward to empty into the Atlantic Ocean.
The OconeeRiver originates with two major headwaters in HallCounty - the North and Middle forks. The two forks converge in ClarkeCounty to form the OconeeRiver proper. It flows southward for approximately 170 miles. At the border of Montgomery/Jeff Davis/Wheeler County, the confluence of the OconeeRiver and Ocmulgee River form Georgia's largest river - the Altamaha River. The Altamaha River then flows eastward into the Atlantic Ocean. The Apalachee River is a tributary to the OconeeRiver, joining it at LakeOconee.
The Savannah River orginates in HartCounty at the confluence of the Tugaloo River and SenecaRiver (Seneca is in South Carolina). This confluence also forms LakeHartwell. From LakeHartwell the Savannah River flows southward for over 300 miles, forming the Georgia/South Carolina border. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean near the city of Savannah. Along with the Tugaloo River, the Broad River is also a tributary of the Savannah.
The St. Marys River originates in the Okefenokee Swamp in CharltonCounty, flows southward, then eastward for a short stretch, then northward, then eastward again - forming the Georgia/Florida border. Altogether the St. Marys River is approximately 90 miles long. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean near the city of St. Marys, south of CumberlandIsland.
The ChattahoocheeRiver originates from mountain springs, primarily Chattahoochee Spring, in the ChattahoocheeNational Forest in HabershamCounty. It flows southwestward, being joined by the Soque River and Chestatee River, eventually passing from the mountains into the piedmont area and flowing through Atlanta. Continuing its course, it flows through western Georgia, eventually becoming part of West PointLake in TroupCounty on the Georgia/Alabama border. From there it flows southward, forming the Georgia/Alabama border, through Columbus, Georgia, before finally emptying into LakeSeminole, along with the Flint River. From LakeSeminole, the ApalachicolaRiver flows southward through the panhandle of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico. The ChattahoocheeRiver is Georgia's longest, at 436 miles.
