o Annie never forgot her humble beginnings and her struggles just to live. She always showed compassion and generosity toward orphans, widows and other young women.

“The birds were small and very fast, most of them being raised especially for that purpose, and usually costing about $5.00 per dozen. Although the dead birds go to the Clubs, I always insisted upon having mine sent to the local charity hospitals.”

o Annie used her money to help orphans and young women attend college.

o During WWI, Annie traveled and visited military posts and demonstrated shooting and firearms safety to soldiers in training camps.

o The Butlers raised money for the Red Cross during WWI and Frank wrote about charity in a later poem:

Don’t you know it’s part of a brother of Man

To find what the grief is and help what you can.

o Annie used $8,000 of her own money to save Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show when Cody’s show fell into financial trouble while traveling through Europe.
