Job Description

Purpose of Role

The Health Facilitation Project is based within Elfrida’s Access to Health Project which aims to improve health services for people with learning difficulties and to promote good health. The Assistant Manager will work alongside a job share partner, also Assistant Manager and the Project Manager taking on responsibility for work in these areas:

  • Health advocacy for adults with learning difficulties experiencing difficulties accessing a range of health services. With a particular focus on short term interventions or health facilitation.
  • With the support of the Project Manager, explore opportunities to produce accessible health information and assist in the development, design and production of accessible resources.
  • With support from the project manager take part in training of health professionals, this might include for example ‘communicating efficiently with adults who have learning difficulties’.
  • Support the overall administration of the project and be aware of available funding opportunities that could be explored by the project manager and operations manager.

Project Development

To assist in the development of the project the Assistant Manager will be looking for possible available funding opportunities that could be explored by the Project Manager.

Specific Tasks:

Health Advocacy:

The Assistant Manager will be expected to advocate on behalf of people experiencing difficulties accessing a range of health services, and support them in advocating for themselves.

Producing Information:

The Assistant Manager will explore opportunities in producing health information materials. The Assistant Manager may also participate in the production of health information with the Project Manager.

Health Promotion:

Using local and national health targets as a guide (including National Service Frameworks and Valuing People), and in conjunction with health professionals as appropriate, the Assistant Manager will be expected to promote good health by working on issues that are particularly relevant to people with learning difficulties. For example; screening, healthy living and dental health. The project works in a holistic way and intends to promote good health with all service users. There may be opportunities for the Assistant Manager to participate in structured health promotion activities depending on workload.

Internal/External Liaison

a)The Assistant Manager will be expected to liaise closely with other Elfrida Society Projects.

b)The Assistant Manager will be expected to maintain good working relationships with local organisations supporting people who have learning difficulties.

c)The Assistant Manager will need to develop contact with a wide range of health and community organisations, (including GP practices, local hospitals and their Patient Advice and Liaison Service, sexual health and other specialist health clinics).

Miscellaneous

a)The Assistant Manager will be expected to attend regular supervision and meetings at the Elfrida Society.

b)The Assistant Manager will also participate in relevant training events as required.

c)All other minor and/or non recurring duties as required.

Administration and Finance

Some administrative support will be available but the worker is expected to set up and maintain their own proper and efficient record keeping and administration systems and support the project to do the same.

Accountability

The Assistant Manager will report directly to the Health Facilitation Project Manager who in turn reports to the Operations Manager, Advocacy, who reports to the Assistant Director of Services, who reports to the Chief Executive, who is accountable to The Board of Trustees.

Terms and Conditions

  • The salary for the post will be £12,270 (£24,540 pa pro rata).
  • The post is a fixed term contract until August 2017
  • Hours of work are 2.5 days per week (17.5 hours per week) (there is some room for negotiating days and times). Additional hours could be offered.
  • Holiday entitlement is 19 days (38 pro rata) per calendar year, inclusive of Public Holidays.
  • All appointments are made on the basis of a satisfactory police check and a

6 month probationary period, after which one month's notice must be given.

  • The work is based at 34 Islington Park Street, but will involve travelling and

visiting other locations as required (fares payable).

Essential Requirements

1)Experience of, and a commitment to, working with and relating to people with learning difficulties.

2)An understanding of the barriers faced by people with learning difficulties in accessing healthcare.

3)Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with people with learning difficulties on an individual basis and in groups.

4)Ability to establish professional relationships at all levels.

5)Excellent written English, and the ability to articulately and confidently communicate with people from all professional levels.

6)Basic knowledge of the structure and functions of the human body.

7)A knowledge of specialist and general health services.

8)Ability to translate goals into action.

9)Good administrative and IT skills.

10)Ability to present complex health information in accessible ways to make it more understandable to people with learning difficulties, their workers and carers.

11)Commitment to the agency's principles and to Equal Opportunities.

12)Commitment to the principles outlined in the Disability Discrimination Acts of 1995 and 2005, the Equalities Act, the Human Rights Act and Valuing People Guidance (2001 and 2009).
