Reading/Phonics

This week we are starting Unit 1 Week 3. I will be modeling how to analyze characters through their actions in a Reader’s Theater format. I will also be modeling how reading fluently affects our understanding of the text.

Comprehension Focus: Ask Questions, Identify Main Idea & supporting details and Answer text-dependent comprehension strategies.Remember to have your child read their stories and printing sheets to you. The extra practice really does pay off! I can tell the children who are reading each night- thanks for your hard work!

Spelling/ Phonics: Spelling lists will usually be sent home on Mondays. I will assess the students on Friday. This week’s words are: blot, plot, clap, flap, slip, glad, dog and ball S-family blends – the students will recognize and spell words containing s-family blends. Ex. Skip, sniff, spot, etc.

The new high-frequency words this week are as, with, at, be and his. Please help your child memorize these words. They should not be trying to sound them out.Remember to practice and review the word baggies, word boxes or lists daily. Don’t forget our past words too! They will continue to see these words throughout our stories.

Math

We will continue with Unit 3.

·  Represent and solve word problems using the correct operation.

·  Determine what the missing number is in an equation.

·  We will also be discussing if an answer is reasonable. This is a critical part of the math program because it reinforces awareness of how numbers can change and affect the outcome. It also allows students to find and repair their understanding of the problem.
