REMEMBERANCE GARDEN
The Remembrance Garden, located on South Brandywine Circle across from where Turnberry begins, is a major project of the Brandywine Garden Club. It was conceived in 1998 by club members and friends who wanted to show their sympathy for Doris Pohlman on the death of her husband Ken, as well as for other deceased Brandywine residents.
First designed by Helen Johnson Hendry, the garden has changed dramatically through the years. The “Birds of Paradise” statue was purchased in 2001 and a sprinkler system and electric line were added. A major renovation took place in 2005 under the direction of Preston Lightsey, when the stepping stones were replaced by white shell pathways. A large blue pot with a giant bromeliad was added in 2012.
Funding for the garden comes almost exclusively from memorial donations by friends and families of deceased Brandywine residents, although the Garden Club has made sizable gifts through the years. Trimming, re-planting, and routine garden care are provided by volunteers, mostly (but not all) Garden Club members. Their contribution has been invaluable. Since 2009 two yearly pruning sessions have been carried out by the Association.
In order to memorialize those residents for whom donations have been made, a Remembrance Garden Book (now two books) was prepared. Ernie Guthridge continues to design pages for these books with a separate page for each honored resident. These volumes which are personal and very unusual are displayed in the Tennis Building. To date 68 residents have been honored by donations.
Everyone is encouraged to visit the garden and enjoy its quiet beauty. There are many native plants which attract butterflies. If you would like to volunteer or to make a donations call Jean Zender at 267-0951.
BRANDYWINE WEBSITE
Use of the Association Internet website(mybrandywine.org) doubled again this past year. The number of views increased from 7,255 in 2010, 16,741 in 2011 to 32,537 in 2012. The increase in visits was very apparent after announcing the award in April 2012 by the “Florida Community Association Journal” as the best website in Florida communities with less than 400 units. Unit owners have learned there is much information and event (party) pictures available on the website. The website is updated frequently with agendas and information about meetings, newsletters and other Association activities. To be put on an email list to receive notices about updates, send an email to Roger Hervey, Brandywine’s volunteer webmaster at
. Emails are sent “blind”. Therefore other unit owners in the group cannot see your email address and they are not shared with anyone.
CERAMICS
Ceramicist Bev Klein is recovering at home following surgery. She hopes to be able to return to her classes in a few weeks.
