1. Rationale

The Asian Collaborative Training Network for Malaria (ACT-Malaria), an international organization concerns on malaria, has conducted several courses at the international level since it has established in 1996. These activities are designed to promote capacity building of health workers in malaria control for Asian region. However, the courses provided limited number of participants from member countries due to limited funds and resources, so that it is important to select appropriate and right persons for attending the courses.

Indonesia has been in charged in conducting Broadening Involvement Team Training (BITTW) Course since 1999. The 3rd BITTW Course will be held in Province of Yogyakarta for the theoretical course and Banjarnegara District for the field practice in April 2006.

  1. Course Objectives

The purpose of the 2006 BITTW Course is to develop Broadening Involvement Team who will be able to improve the planning, implementation, development and follow-up of malaria control program based on evidence-based data gained from good qualitative research, FGD, In-depth interview and broadening the proposed activities by qualified partnership, networking and advocacy to other linked sectors. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Practice team building, good communication skill including presentation skill, critical thinking and problem solving
  • Assess the need of malaria control program by conducting qualitative research and several activities related to it such as PRA, FGD, In-depth interview to important key persons in gaining important issues related to malaria, so that the problems can be solved objectively.
  • Analyze data related to qualitative research. Thus, the results can be applied as the basis evidence for next plan in overcome malaria problems as a comprehensive approach
  • Conduct networking and partnership to others potential organizations in solving malaria problems
  • Conduct an advocacy process to top managers in all levels (district, provincial and national) and convince them that malaria is a serious public problem
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate the broadening involvement of others sectors in overcoming malaria problem
  1. Unique Features of the Course
  • The course is designed to address problems due to the lack of necessary skills among health workers in malaria control in Asian region
  • The curriculum will utilize a performance-based training approach, focus on developing the participant’s knowledge, skills and practice needed in planning, designing, implementing and evaluating of broadening involvement activities to malaria control program
  • Broadening involvement Team will use student-centered and interactive participatory approaches in where participants are encouraged to apply both their previous experiences and newly acquired knowledge in group work to solve the problem or main issues related to malaria, especially those related to broadening involvement activities
  • At the end of the course, each broadening involvement team will produce a project proposal that will be implemented upon returning to their home country
  1. Course Layout

The BITTW course consist of 3 phases

Phase 1: Preparation of candidates for the course by country program directors:

  • Select suitable candidates for a broadening involvement team
  • Identify a broadening involvement project to be conducted by the country
  • Gather some information about the broadening involvement projects which have been implemented or being implemented in the member countries

Phase 2: BITTW-Course/workshop

  • Workshop or course will be conducted in Yogyakarta and Banjarnegara, Indonesia
  • The duration of workshop is 4 weeks from 2 – 29 April 2006
  • The course will be in class room in Yogyakarta and field practice in district of Banjarnegara
  • The broadening involvement team of each country is expected to develop proposal country project which will be implemented following the completion of the course

Phase 3: Post course

  • Get approval to conduct Broadening Involvement project
  • Work with partners and build a networking
  • Conduct the process of broadening involvement activity
  • Monitor and follow-up of by country directors
  • Overall evaluation (post training evaluation) by ACT-Malaria foundation
  1. Prerequisites of the Course

This workshop features a broadening involvement team approach in where the preference will be given to participants who are proposed by country directors. The minimum numbers of participants for each country are 2 persons. Preferably one of them is a mid level manager in malaria control/vector borne control department in national, provincial or district level which faces malaria as a public health problem. Participants should be:

  • Responsible for the malaria control program especially on broadening involvement of this issue in district, provincial or national levels
  • Committed at least 3 years in relevant posts following completion of the course
  • Have adequate English language in order to be able to participate in discussion and prepare a written report
  • Able to meet international flight requirement concerning health and be able to undertake rigorous filed works during course
  • Participants having ACT-Malaria course experiences will be nicely considered
  1. Expenses
  • Tuition fee (covers food, accommodation, ground transportation, health insurance, training materials and tuition): USD 3,500
  • Subsistence allowance at USD15/day: USD 450
  • Travel estimation at round trip home-Jakarta-Yogyakarta-Banjarnegara: USD 1,500
  1. Course Recognition

Participants will receive the certificate of achievement or certificate of attendance after the completion of the course.

  1. Travel

The course will starton Sunday evening, 2 April 2006 in Yogyakarta (central Java). Participants must arrive in Yogyakarta by the 2 April 2006. Participants will move to Banjarnegara on 6 April 2006 for conducting field practice and the closing ceremony will be held in Yogyakarta on Saturday, 29 April 2006.

Participants from ASEAN countries with official or service passports do not require visas except PR China, Bangladesh and Nepal. The participants should check visa requirement. Please note that visas take some time to prepare and this should be undertaken at least a month before departure. Airport tax must be paid by the participants.
