NOTE: There will be a quiz on the gas laws next Wednesday!
Thursday
____ Abby, please watch the first half of the Dalton’ s Law video found in the Resources column.
____ Read pp. 161-164 in your Spectrum Chemistry text. Read it carefully. Look at all the diagrams. Challenge yourself to understand all that it explains.
The upshot of Avogadro’s Law is this: One mole of any gas, at STP, occupies 22.4L of volume. That’s it.
____ Complete the exercise on page 164*.
So for problem # 1) under Avogadro's Law, you convert from L to find out how many moles you have, then do a second problem using the gram amount to figure out how much one mole would weigh, then compare it to the atomic masses on the Periodic Table and, voila, you've got your answer! (Keep in mind some gases are diatomic... I don't know if this comes into play on this problem because I haven't done it, but you should keep that in mind!)

____ Read pp. 165-166 in your text. The Ideal Gas Law – this is the law that pulls all the others together.
____ Watch the Brightstorm video about the Ideal Gas Law. The link is in the Resources column. This is a great video because it derives the formula and gives you the definition of the the constant “R”. (Abby, you’ll like it!)
____ Complete the exercise on page 166*. Do not be overwhelmed.
1. Simply figure out what units are represented in the problem,
2. refer to your cheat sheet for which formula to use,
3. then convert the units to L, atm, and K,
4. then solve algebraically.
That's it!
Problem # 6 is confusing. Don't do it. Here's what I want you to do instead:
Rewrite the formula PV=nRT to solve for P; to solve for V, to solve for n, and to solve for T

____ Complete the exercise on page 167*. This is where your common sense and chemistry skills all come together! Go slowly, you can do this.
Tuesday
____ Study for the quiz. There is a link to a study guide page in the Resources column. If you can do these, you are a master! Don’t worry if some of the language is different or not what we’ve used; your quiz will come from the text and the classwork! (See page 168 for what will be covered. ) You will be permitted to use the Gas Laws Cheat Sheet for the quiz. If you want/need extra credit, choose not to!
