Thank you for signing up to sell at our next NCT Nearly New Sale on 29th April. Our sale is a great way of raising awareness and funds for the excellent work of NCT

To ensure that the sale runs smoothly please read through the simple guidelines in this leaflet.

Please arrive to drop off your items at 08.30. You can collect your items from 13.15 until 13.45.

As a seller you are entitled to enter the sale early at 10:45. Ask for a sellers tag when dropping your items off as this will ensure you get early entry.

If you also volunteer for two time slots you will get access at 10:30.

If you have any questions or need any more information then please contact the Nearly New Sale team on . The sale is run entirely by volunteers so don’t worry if you don’t hear from us straight away, we will get back to you.

How does the sale work?

We register a maximum of 50 sellers, then send confirmation and labels

Sellers price and label their own goods

Sellers bring their items in large boxes to the venue on sale day, at the specified time

Volunteers set out the items for display

At the end of the sale sellers return to collect any unsold items which the volunteers will have collated in your box

After the sale you will receive a BACS transfer for your share of the proceeds. We endeavour to do this as soon as possible after the sale and this will be no later than one month after the sale.

What is my £10 deposit for?

This secures your place as a seller and will be returned (minus the £5 admin fee). If you do not turn up on the day either to sell your goods or to collect them then you will forfeit your deposit in full. Please note that our£5 admin fee will be deducted from your deposit.

Please also note that the £10 deposit will be refunded to you separately to your sale proceeds.

How much of the proceeds will I receive?

For all the items that you sell you will take home 70% of the sale price less an admin fee of £5. The admin fee includes general admin and postage charges plus a contribution towards secure cash collection of the sale proceeds, which we now require as our successful sale grows and grows. The NCT receives 30% which goes towards the charity’s work supporting local mums and dads, preparing them for birth and early parenthood.

What can I sell?

Clean, good quality and correctly labelled items such as baby & children’s clothes (up to age 6 only), children’s toys and equipment, books, DVDs, maternity clothes can all be sold. Clothing is seasonal so please only include the relevant clothing for autumn/winter or spring/summer. Please see below for items which are accepted at NCT Nearly New Sales.

The following items can be sold, provided they meet the requirements:

Children’s toys (if safe, complete and in good working order)

Clothing (clean, ironed and in good condition)

Clean, dry and firm second hand mattresses (must have a waterproof cover with no tears, crack or holes). ‘Ventilated’ mattresses should not be sold

Children’s pedal cycles (saddle height less than 635mm)

Prams & Buggies which meet the requirements of the Wheeled Child Conveyances (Safety) regulations 1997 and have working brakes, locking devices and harness

Please do remember this is a Nearly New Sale - if items are in poor condition they will put buyers off and we reserve the right not to include them in the sale and return them to your box. Broken or missing parts must be clearly labelled.

What cannot be sold?

It is your responsibility to ensure that goods you are selling are safe and fit for purpose. In order to protect NCT, you (the seller) and our customers, we have created a list of items that WILL NOT be accepted for sale at any NCT Nearly New Sale:

Recalled items (see information about recalls on RAPEX: )

Bag style baby slings (deep pouch and elasticated edge)

Car seats, car booster seats, ’Isofix’ bases or infant carriers from travel systems

Riding hats or crash helmets

Children’s outer garments with a draw string hood

Bottles, baby food & formula milk

Second-hand breast pumps

How should I prepare & price my items?

Please price items in multiples of 50p. (£1.00, £1.50, £2.00 etc.)

The minimum price is 50p.

Pricing is up to you but bear in mind that if you price things highly they may not sell. Many high street outlets and supermarkets are selling clothing very cheaply now, even quality brands, so price your items competitively.

Most sellers use the following guidelines: (range for clothing depends on age/size/style)

Shorts/Tshirt50p-£2.50Sleep bags£1-5Sit-and-ride £3-6

Blouse/shirt50p-£2.50Maternity trousers£4-10Change mat £1

How should I label my items?

We use a two part label system to increase accuracy and speed up payment at the tills. At the checkout, half the ticket will be torn off and retained and half will remain attached to the item. Please use the labels provided to mark up your goods before the sale.

Both halves of the label should display the same information. Please attach just one half of the label to your items - the other half needs to be easily removed at the tills so please do not cover the perforation with sticky tape (this will cause delays at the tills and be frustrating for our volunteers). Labels need to be attached securely to items (not to hangers) using safety pins or string (on clothes) or sellotape on one half of the label only (on hard items). For security reasons we do not sell items without a label attached. So no label = no sale and the item can only be returned to you if you pick it from the “lost labels” table at the end of the sale.

If an item includes two or more parts, do label each part but make sure to indicate which part it is and how many parts in total. For example, “2 of 4 parts”. This will ensure the parts of your item are sold as a whole and not duplicated in the accounting process. Only enter the price on part 1 being clear about the total price of the items included.

Labels must include:

Seller number (essential for adding up your sales total)

Price (only in 50p denominations)

Description

Age/size (e.g. Boys trousers age 12-18 mo)

How should I package my items?

Bring your items in a box with your seller number clearly marked on each of the 4 sides.

Only clothes may be delivered in a bag (see limits below) and you must ensure you provide at least one clearly marked box in order for any unsold goods to be returned.

All clothing (other than bundles) including sleeping bags, must be on hangers as it is easier to display than in bags. We will not supply hangers, this is your responsibility.

Please deliver no more than 1 bag / box of clothing items (about 40 items). If you deliver more than this we will use discretion over which items to display for sale.

Clothes need to be sorted by sex and in the following size groups: 0-3 mo, 3-6 mo, 6-9 mo, 9-12 mo, 1-2 yrs, 2-3 yrs, 3-4yrs 4-5 yrs, 5-6 yrs, maternity. Unsorted clothing items may not be displayed.

The maximum age for clothes is age 6 years.

If selling a bundle of items please ensure they are firmly attached to each other and that the price tag states clearly what is included in the bundle.

If your item contains detachable pieces, e.g. equipment or toys, then be sure they are attached firmly to the item so they cannot be lost.

If you have the original packaging and or instructions please include them - but don't tape it shut as people who can't check the goods inside may be reluctant to buy it.

Is there a maximum to the items I can submit?

You will be permitted to submit a maximum of one large box or bag (about 40 items) of clothing. If you submit more than this on the day then we reserve the right to select which clothes are displayed for sale.

There is no maximum for other types of item

Can I sell large items?

There will be a reserved area for large furniture items like highchairs, pushchairs, cots etc. Space is restricted so if you are interested in selling such an item please let us know on the sellers’ contract. If the item is not assembled on the day of the sale due to its size, we strongly suggest that a picture is attached so sellers can see what the item looks like (e.g. for a cot)

For security purposes, you are required to inform us upon registration at the door if you intend to sell any item for £50 or more. You must provide a sheet of paper with full description of the item and a list of each component or accessory included. (e.g. pushchair with rain cover, cosy toes, etc.)

How can I maximise my sales?

If you have several low value items such as small books or baby sleep suits, combine them in a clear plastic food bag to make one higher value item. In other words, group items in sensible sets or bundles.

Name brands sell best, so including a NEXT or GAP item with other no-name items will help the latter sell.

Seasonal items sell best in the correct season, we have 2 Nearly New Sales a year, so plan accordingly.

Select the best quality baby clothing. We generally have an excess of 0-12 month garments.

Expensive items may not always be bought. If you really want an item to sell, price it accordingly. Bear in mind that new items can be purchased very cheaply from places like Primark, Asda and Tesco.

If you have items which didn’t sell in a previous sale, give some thought to why and whether it’s worth submitting them again, rather than just throwing everything in again sale after sale. A ten year old cot, for example, probably doesn’t meet the expectations set by current product features.

In our last sale, clothes not on hangers did not sell well (excluding bundles).

What happens after the sale?

After the sale your items will be sorted into the labelled box you have provided and will be available for you to collect at 13:15. Make sure that you also check the lost labels table.

Please note that, whilst we do our best to provide reasonable security at sales, all items are left at the venue at the seller’s risk. The NCT accepts no liability for any loss or damage caused to goods for sale.

Please ensure you view the lost property table before you leave with your unsold goods.

It is your responsibility to collect your items, and uncollected items may not get back to you.

A BACS transfer will be made to you within one month of the sale. Our treasurer works hard to make the transfer as soon as possible, but do let us know if you have not received your money a month after the sale. We no longer send out labels after the sale but if you want to receive yours then you can arrange to collect them from our treasurer.

Volunteering

The success of our Nearly New Sales depends entirely on our fantastic team of volunteers

We always welcome new members of the team and there are a number of different roles available. To thank you for your efforts all volunteers who commit to helping for a minimum of two timeslots (two hours each) are invited to join in the pre-sale shopping before the doors are open to the public and members.
