Objective

To approve the development of local World Heritage Columns concept and to instruct the secretariat in cooperation with Aanjager Waddensea World heritage and Staatsbosbeheer, to proceed with the further development of the concept of the local columns in the framework of PROWAD as described in this document.

Background

The current world heritage columns give a general overview of the Wadden Sea and why it has become World Heritage. The missing link is information on where can you experience the World heritage in your neighborhood. The ‘glocal’ flyers are good initiative to provide extra information.

In the Netherlands, we got the request from Staatsbosbeheer to develop an information column which combines the information on the World Heritage and about the surrounding nature reserves. One side will be devoted to the World heritage and the other three sides to the nature areas. We propose to use the same design as the current column. It is an elegant shape and by using it more often is will be easily recognized as a message from Wadden Sea World Heritage.

The objective of the local Columns is to entice the people to visit the various nature areas and to enhance the local visibility, perceptibility and understanding of the Wadden Sea as a World Heritage in the various regions along the Wadden Sea coast.

The new columns will not compete with the general WH Columns rather they enhance them by providing more local information where can you enjoy the WH around here. When choosing the locations the general WH Columns will be the priority.

Status

For the area of Holwerd, where the ferry to Ameland leaves Staatsbosbeheer is working on this, they are also in contact with it Fryske Gea. They are now looking into possibilities of co-designing and co-financing the Columns

Outlook.

The columns should be placed strategically at locations where one can actually see the nature areas concerned and where there are many visitors. For the Netherlands we think there are possibilities for other locations like the ferry harbor of Texel, or even on the ferry, Den Oever, Harlingen beach, Lauwersoog and Termunterzijl. Also the island could be good locations. By placing the columns near nature areas the chances of vandalism is reduced.

It is clear that also in Denmark and Denmark and Germany there must be many potential locations for the columns

Design idea

Side one: Wadden Sea World Heritage, general information, map Wadden Sea and dot: “you are here!” General description in three languages (Dutch, German and English). Pictures logo’s

Other three sides: on top picture, map with POI’s and direction, pictures of OUV in the area. Language local language and English and German?

Process

After approval from the TGST we continue locally with developing the columns, specialist will be asked to do the design ( three companies) . The final design will be approved by the TGST, either in a meeting or by mail. and the first column will be produced. Experience and Design will be documented, included in the catalogue.

Financing

Layout and design will be financed by Prowad, the actual production of the column will be financed locally, in this case Staatsbosbeheer and it Fryske Gea. For subsequent columns Pro wad could finance the lay out and the actual product is financed locally.

Proposal

The meeting is proposed

  1. to discuss respectively approve the proposed concept of a “local column”
  2. to approve the financing of the design and layout by PROWAD,
  3. to appoint CWSS in cooperation with Staatsbosbeheer and de aanjager Waddensea World heritage to jointly developthe concept of the local column.
